I don't think we'll be fighting Russian soldiers on UK soil any time soon

And we won't be leaving the country to fight for someone else's cause

Not really sure what else to say

It's not happening

Not for me, not for you

If it didn't need saying before now...

You don't need to worry about the independence day "fighting the aliens" you daft cunt...

Everyone knows the aliens have been in charge since the Egyptians

As in other conflicts, soldiers leave these shores to fight for our cause, not necessarily that of others. Allies have the same potential risks, some more than others, but as allies, we back each other up.

Strength in numbers, and it's worked for decades since the war.

Doing so elsewhere prevents invaders from getting here.

The fact we and our foes now hold nuclear weapons means this is null and void.

Hence the dance over weapons to Ukraine.

If we and especially the US deployed their best kit they would have humiliated Russia and they would have nuked.

Diplomacy wins every time but you need the threat of force to back it up.

If that's the case, then why have we got former senior military officials saying our force numbers are too low?

Why are we being told that war with Russia may happen within 5 years?

Why have we as a nation entered into new, mutual defence agreements with nations in Scandinavia for example?

All a bit pointless surely.

Russia has threatened the use of tactical nuclear weapons in Ukraine but hasn't used them. Meanwhile, many have been killed, despite the more modern focus on technology.

There are also many more potential foes than Russia.

Following your rationale, we may as well have virtually no military, and just build up more nukes!

Aye

But I can't envisage a scenario unfolding where UK civilians stop going about their daily lives to fight a war, either here or abroad

I doubt normal working folk envisaged that in the years prior to 1914 or 1939 either.

I agree with you in the main. We still need a decent armed forces for the rest of the world. Against a nuclear power it doesn't matter in reality.

Russia has shown itself to be a pretty pathetic force despite the vast numbers of artillery and tanks. A very small number of western kit has absolutely ridiculed russian heavy equipment but if Russia wished it could nuke Ukraine.

It's highly unlikely, but I can envisage a sequence of events that might bring it about. We're uncomfortably close to another World War, and it doesn't take much of a spark to light the tinder.

I think the difference now is that a world war would be unrecognisable from the previous ones.

It wouldn’t be a case of Goodies vs Baddies.

Nowhere near as simple.

You now have competing ideologies, religion and dictators all vying for a role on the stage.

Technically, a world war has been rumbling on since 9/11, maybe even the Gulf War.

Its a bit mental that one of the biggest threats is a single bloke wielding power like Putin does.

As a species, we either never learn, or never want to.

yeah, a "world war" of some sort isn't out of the question with the russians and chinese getting it on or something

but not to the point folk on here would have to sign up to fight because we didn't have enough troops on the ground to fight whatever it is they have to fight, I don't think

I certainly don't see a foreign invasion on british soil akin to what the nazis did in europe, or like what russia are doing in ukraine

Not a chance anyone on here would have to sign up, unless it was for Dad's Army.

I dunno you know

The 41st Royal Scooter Corps could do a fair bit of damage as they phut-phutted their way into enemy territory.

Kicking commies up the arse with a pair of feverishly buffed George Cox winklepickers, sending them scattering whilst throwing Chinese stars from under their Harrington jackets.

Formidable
