Meanwhile in Ukraine

I'm no military expert and have no interest in politics but the 1st thing that crossed my mind when Rishi Sunak announced the election was that he knew some serious sh*t was going to go down with Russia and he wanted no part in it or was too scared of what was going to happen.

Hopefully I'm totally wrong but seems like something is brewing now.

I think it's more likely that he couldn't risk the Rwanda plan being an unmitigated disaster.

A mate out of our local has a daughter who was going out with a lad from York who had joined the Ukranian defence Forces last year, they found out on Sunday he has been killed in the Ukraine

That's pretty grim 😬

I highly doubt that would be the case, or what the serious shit could be over and above what we're currently mired in. We're not about to get nuked at any rate.

I read this today, really interesting article about the state of the UK armed forces currently and as clear an indication as any that we need NATO as much as NATO needs us. Some of those capabilities that are just one loss away from (literally in some cases) sinking us are quite eye opening

We're a long way behind where we need to be and I'm amazed this wasn't more of an issue during the election.

The new Government have ordered a strategic defence review already haven't they?

Yeah I think this series of reports from RUSI is like a preface to that review. Seems pretty obvious to me from that that it'll be impossible to address all the issues, we're just going to have to concentrate on certain elements and rely on other nations to plug the gaps - which we will do in turn for other NATO members with some of our capabilities.

I'm surprised it wasn't an issue either especially when we're so financially/materially committed in Ukraine.

I wonder if it just wasn't considered to be a contested enough battleground (so to speak) to put any time or effort into debating when the general consensus is that we still need to offer support to Ukraine.

R.I.P and upmost respect to him.

We should always have had troops there.

Nah

Weapons is all we should be providing. We have precious few soldiers as it is.

If someone wants to go there for personal reasons, fair play but it's their call.

Your centrist pal Macron disagrees.

I often think with my heart though. Which is why I'm shite at betting and would make a terrible leader. Though I'm getting more rational with each passing year 😁

Either way, we need to do more. Any land in Ukraine is a win for Putin and it is looking likely that he will be allowed that win. Which is a huge worry for the other neighbouring countries.

Providing weaponry is just prolonging the destruction and slaughter.

This thing needs an outcome, either support is withdrawn and Ukraine becomes a Russian puppet state or NATO/EU put boots on the ground an give Putin a bloody nose.

We aren't poking our oily beaks in anything. Just giving an Ally some kit they need after being invaded by a cunt.

I support this all the way.

Just playing devil's advocate. If our self defence is as hollow as some are making out, can we afford the amount of support we give?

I'd give em our last bullet like but I get the concerns.

To be fair - and I don't know how he'll do at the rest of the summit. But Biden did very well in that NATO speech.

Too think people called him when he was the first black womanly to serve under Obama 😂
