Meanwhile in Ukraine

Would it be possible for the pilots to be non ukraines?

Possible but I doubt it, UkrAF pilots have been training on them in NATO countries for a while now so should be just their lot flying them.

Still don't see these as some sort of magic bullet but it seems like we're relaxing the rules on what kinds of weapons we let Ukraine use. Big if, but if the US allows Ukraine's F-16's to use their more advanced weapons then they will make a difference.

(And bring *us* closer to a full on shooting war)

I think the west has now realised that the initial weapons restrictions didn't work given the undoubted Russian cyber attacks, and acts of selected distraction all over.

The level of sabotage has been increasing, so may as well let Ukraine have the weapons and kick Russia's arse.

I've just read there are actually only 6 Ukrainian pilots trained to fly them currently, but that theyre due to receive around 85 planes, so it's not going to have an immediate effect.

Apparently the west is still also walking on this weird tightrope of not being seen to directly intervene (?!) as there's claims that some of these jets will be flown on missions from bases outside Ukraine but take off from there unarmed, land in Ukraine, arm, fly the mission, land, de-arm, then fly back to the place they came from. Mental.

I would imagine that is largely because of logistics issues for maintenance etc.

As you know, they're not as easily looked after as a Saab for example, which would have been more ideal.

Yeah that is another huge issue as well, these will fall to bits on anything other than pristine runways and taxiways!

Russia has said it will attack any base anywhere that these fly combat missions from, which might be seen as their usual bluster, but if these are using say Poland's bases close to the border to stage from and Russia attacks there, then we really are into a whole different phase

Potentially.

Given Russia's state sponsored espionage and acts of terror, I'm not sure we can do much, other than prepare for such an eventuality.

Interesting listen this, Justin Bronk is a proper authority on it all, really explains the advantage the Gripen has over F-16 too.

I want his new book, but it's £130 so fack that!

This sabotage thing around Europe is an interesting subject, need to find out more about it. Basically acts of war if it is traced to Russia.

Not heard anything more about the stuff on the railways before the Olympics though.

Mind you, they never ended up catching that The Fly bloke who got busted out of jail months ago either!

Fibre optic cables in France have since been targeted and cut.

With all the depressing shit going on, it's funny how a simple photo like this can lift your spirits.

Now it's officially official.

Might only be for the benefit of the photo but they're not top end weapons it's carrying.

I've heard there's a bounty out for whatever Russian units can shoot one down 😬

Understand they can deliver Storm Shadows... that should make a difference... Pal used to fly Tornados...he was always complaining the Dutch F16s used to wipe out the RAF before lunch break... i used to remind him about the jobs created in Warton 🙂

I bet he has some great stories! Think we might have been getting a fair few pastings until Typhoon came along, in close range dogfights at least anyway.

Reading between the lines they'll be able to use Storm Shadow even more effectively than they have been up to now. Unsurprising Ukraine has been given loads of mock up F-16 models to use as decoys on the ground, can imagine Russia going all out to hit these

They've also been upgraded with a Danish system that helps identify and then deflect/neutralise enemy missiles.

They might be the unusual looking things that are part of one of the wing pylons. How in depth the training has gone into all the systems I don't know, this has been seriously fast tracked!
