I watched a documentary about the lend-lease agreement with had with America during/after WW2.

Crikey, was it punitive. 

Moreover, the discussion and details screwed us over and really did hasten the decline of the British Empire, and start America on the road to become a superpower.

A post war Labour Government used it to prop up financially wasteful policies whilst Germany etc. embarked on a properly managed recovery plan... we squandered the lot!

To an extent, but we also gave up some strangleholds we had over the Americans on trade. 

We also had to "sell stuff on the cheap" to them.

They performed much like Xi is doing now with Russia.
