Mounts Kipper
Had my flu Jab yesterday for the first time ever, woke up with a cracker of a headache this morning, not sure if it was the 3 pints of San Miguel or the jab pushed me over the edge, still feel bit ropey so I’m thinking it’s the jab. Kent will know for sure, but the flu jab covers the strain anticipated to do the rounds. Could be a different strain in her case, or even some other lurgi. You went to hospital for a diagnosis? It’s barely any wonder our hospitals are overstretched! I reckon a pharmacist could have done the diagnosis. She's spent 2 days in resuss before being moved onto a ward, they reckon she's going to be in for another 2 days.. It's due to another whopping clanger from our GP who is clueless and incompetent. A pharmacist would have no idea where to begin with my other halves health issues.
Site Supporter Tonge moor green jacket Posted November 9, 2022 Site Supporter Share Posted November 9, 2022 A pharmacist can't diagnose it anyway- would need a blood test. The strain could be different from the one that the vaccine is targeting, or it just didn't work for her. Iirc, the flu vaccine is less effective than the covid ones. I've never had flu, her chest is that bad atm that she still can hardly talk having been on meds for 5 days. If you are offered a vaccine, take one.... Ill defer to at @kent_whitebut im told theres no blood test for flu @MickyD is correct, theres no reason a pharmacist couldnt diagnose Its just about the symptoms If mrs swanny has flu, she wont have a different strain to everybody else. why would she have, where is it coming from?Shes clearly got other issues which are aggravating things
Site Supporter Tonge moor green jacket Posted November 9, 2022 Site Supporter Share Posted November 9, 2022 There are many strains of flu. The one that is targeted by a season's vaccination programme is worked out by what is happening elsewhere, history etc. Doesn't mean that only one strain is available. Do your own reading. Flu can be identified, just as covid can be and other viruses. Just not done in a chemist shop. PCR etc. There are significant structural differences between the viruses making them identifiable. Again, the info is out there. In Mrs Swannys case they have taken her in and determined that-he has just told us! In her case such work may he necessary to aid her treatment as she's particularly vulnerable. A chemist saying you've got the flu would only be doing a symptomatic assessment, and using the term loosely as "flu" is regularly used for a whole range of illnesses. As he ‘generalised’ flu and I then also generalised, why the hell are you telling us how many different forms of flu there could be? My point was that a pharmacist could give that information Swanny was alluding to; she had flu. The hospital, as far as this is concerned, didn’t go beyond that. Popular Post kent_white
Hi all, First thing is that proper flu, like Swanny's wife has, is serious and I'm glad she's getting proper care. If you're unlucky enough to get it, it will at the very least put you on your back for a week. I've seen plenty of people who are generally fit and well up at the hospital with flu. If you get your vaccine offered to you, please have it. I get mine as soon as I get the chance every year. A pharmacist wouldn't be able to properly diagnose flu just based on symptoms. You usually need a nasal swab like you have for COVID and then this goes off to the lab to be tested for influenza. You can have both vaccines at the same time. But because you can sometimes feel unwell for a short time afterwards, some places prefer to space them out. Although if there's any danger you might not turn up for your second jab - they will usually do it there and then for you. I can't remember who said it but they were right, the flu vaccine is different every year, and it only offers protection against the most prevalent strains in that particular season. They are very rarely (if ever) 100% effective but having some immunity is much, much better than having none at all if you're exposed to the virus. It's amazing how the vaccine is developed. Each year flu evolves and mutates into different strains while it's mainly in the Northern hemisphere. We collect loads of data and provide this to the southern hemisphere so that they can prepare their seasonal vaccine. Then the southern hemisphere does the same when they get the return wave. This happens year after year after year. Fantastic really. But that shot in your arm is the work of hundreds of thousands of people across the world labouring 24/7, 365 days a year!
