Yes apart from this I thought Covid was handled quite well. Looking at other countries (can we compare countries in this thread?) no one seemed to do everything right and I don’t think any country was expected to

Absolutely.

The amount of borrowing to get through it was warned against in some quarters as it would affect the economy later.

Which has happened.

The same all over.

Yet had the money not been spent, just imagine what the political effects would have been at the time.

Devil and the deep blue sea.

Anyway, that's rhe reason for the enquiry. To reveal successes and failures, and learn from them.

I just hope the powers that ‘were’ didn’t simply channel loads of money to companies they or their families had a stake in.

Because that would be very suspicious, even in a pandemic.

I'm sure none of that went on. Everything throughout the pandemic trusted the science and was done for the greater good

Been following things in New Zealand. They were praised by many for their approach to COVID restrictions. The government has recently been ousted. A Labour government, unfairly by my reckoning. We may have a NZ poster who could enlighten us.

https://amp.theguardian.com/world/2023/oct/14/new-zealand-election-2023-results-national-party-labour-

Acknowledging the natural disasters, terrorist attack and pandemic that marred his government’s term, Hipkins said: “I honestly think that the Gods rounded up curveballs to throw at us.”

I dont live there anymore but still follow NZ politics. Light years ahead of the UK btw.

Ardern locked down Auckland far too long,  where about 40% of the population live.  It dominates NZ so much that pretty much everyone was affected.

Also Labour engineered a housing boom during Covid which they're now paying for.

Anyone watching this enquiry on Sky news?

Ol' Party Marty turned his disappearing message function on just as the inquiry started and cant remember why he did it.

But he can remember every single other bit of detail at the time.

Looking increasingly as though lockdowns were the wrong option.

Bold

How many lives did they save?

How many would have died had we just carried on as normal?

I would like to know what evidence they have and if anyone mentions fucking Sweden I will fucking scream as they clearly do not understand Sweden.

It’s impossible to prove either way.

So a nonsensical statement

Go on, I'll call this out, because whatever your rationale, you are typing absolute, unadulterated horse shit.

If a few months of me not seeing my mates down the pub, and having to hug my nan virtually for a few months meant that Betty down the road and thousands, if not millions, like her, had the best chance of living, I'd do the same again.

Every. Single. Time.

I believe he's alluding to the point where yesterday when questioned Cummings believed that with a better test and trace system we wouldn't have had to lockdown, but because Cummings believed Dido and Handcock were not up to the task and repeatedly lied about how up to speed they were to the cabinet office that lockdowns became inevitable to protect the most vulnerable as there was no other system in place.

It was Cummings way of saying the system (of which he was part of) wasn't up to the task and led to harder lockdowns that were inconsistent.

But that's quite a leap to then suggest lockdowns were not needed.

I honestly did think a G7 country would have a pandemic plan in place.

Turns out we didn’t (neither did any of them to be fair).

Still, Boris had bigger issues to worry about at the time, I’m sure.

There was a dedicated team called the Threats, Hazards, Resilience and Contingency Committee that was responsible for pandemic planning, but Johnson scrapped it 6 months before Covid.
