Big Match Revisited Heads Up

Did we take loads to Meadow Lane that day? Our home and away attendances had dwindled a lot the season before in the top tier.

The result was certainly a pre-cursor of what was a largely shit season to follow with relegation averted two or three weekends from the end of the season with a draw at Orient.

Wasn't a particularly big following iirc for the opening day.

It was a harrowing business following Bolton away for a lot of the 80s. Early 80s there were barely any wins. I guess Blackburn or PNE were our biggest followings in 80/81 - a hard fought 0-0 at Ewood late season and a 1-2  win at Deepdale. PNE got relegated that year. I was at the former but very young.

Oldham as well if I've got my years correct? Though I got nicked on the Chaddy end after about 5 minutes 😕

Yep, we would have played Oldham that year! Was this also the year we played Wrexham over Christmas and took a good few - it was a 0-1 win. Another rare away victory!

Oldham was October /November. It kicked off all over town before the game.

1982/83 season Granada showed us once all fecking season. A 0-0 draw at Burnley on the opening day.  Kick off or Match Time as it was then, was on a Saturday night that year. Utd or Liverpool were on every week with City and Everton making up the numbers. They had a new guy fronting the programme called Elton Welsby. Absolute tosser. No idea what became of him.

Granadas footy coverage was always shite compared to the other regional channels.

Yes Welsby was an annoying individual. He's on Twitter and still seems to be.

Granada only showed that 0-0 v Burnley but one of the Midlands channels showed Derby 0 Bolton 0 and Leicester 0 Bolton 0. The former was relatively early season and a very young Steve Thompson's debut. The latter was late season - Leicester chasing promotion and us in a relegation dogfight and fielding kids after the sales of Tony Henry and Peter Reid. Pretty remarkable draw really. Three 0-0s though!

Well I'm sure midlands viewers were enthralled by a very youthful Warren Joyce covering every blade of grass at Filbert Street with that inimitable head down running style that we were to become so familiar with.

Don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone run in the same style as the skilful bull since. Very distinctive at the time

It was unique. There was a chap near us in the Manny Road Stand who specialised in increasingly loud shrieks of "ooooh, gerroff the bloody park Joyce". To the extent that nearby season ticket holders could have a pre match bet as to how often this would be uttered during the 90 minutes.

To be fair to Joyce whenever he came to play against Bolton for one of his later clubs he looked to have improved and he had a solid career in the game.

I was always lucky... In between getting beers & going for pisses ( it was my mates 18th so we were steaming) I managed to not see all 4 goals in our win over Wor Kevs lot 😕

I'm gutted that wasn't on the telly on Saturday.

Has the 77 opener at Burnley been on (won 1-0)? That was on kick off iirc

Nah - they have not done any of 77/78 yet. There's quite a bit of ITV's coverage from that season already on You Tube (Blackpool H, Bristol R A, Tottenham H, Luton H, Fulham H). That Burnley game was certainly screened and I think the BBC did the 1-1 home draw with Brighton too.

I remember that one. Walking to the ground past a wire fence with a cricket match in full flow.

We bobbed into a pub on the way back & were stared at by a bunch of banjo pickers like we were from outer space.

Ha, i was at that one & it was great fun.  There were only a couple of hundred Bolton there, mostly lads, we were that hopeless most people had given it up. From the start we were under siege with us just defending & hacking the ball away anywhere ( in comparison, the 0-0 at Derby a few years back, was free flowing ,attacking football ) & we just waited for the inevitable goals to come.......after about an hour of survival somehow though, their fans got subdued & we started celebrating every clearance & every tackle, until the final whistle when we went into way over the top celebrations. The locals didn't see the funny side of it.

Sadly, I think we still went down & they went up.
