Bury

The only reason any Bolton fan had to know much about Bury was because they were our ‘paired’ team for GMP policing reasons. We played at home, they’d be away and vice versa.

Other than that; nothing.

For me, what defines a rival is when you play them, does you see it as just another game, or does victory feel that bit more sweet and defeat that bit more painful?  If so, then, in my book, that makes them a rival.  Whether you want to admit or not.

Chuck in whether it's a game you look for when the fixtures come out, make sure no plans clash when we play them etc. Or get excited if we draw them in the cup.

We went virtually my entire childhood not playing against Wigan so when I started working there as a 17 year old I was little taken aback by just how much they hated us when I'd literally never even us play them whereas I was the perfect age to be taken in by the hatred of Tranmere around the time of the cup semi, Challinor, Jussi's injury etc. Throw in the history with Wolves at the time and even playing Bury a couple of times (in front of bloody big crowds, too) and it was no wonder Wigan weren't on the radar.

Sooner or later though we've got to come to terms with the fact that they've been a similar level to us on the field for the last 16 years now and we've had an entire generation of fans growing up being used to having big games against Wigan in much the same way that those a similar age to me (34) will have viewed Tranmere and Wolves as a kid. And, being honest, it's nice to have that rivalry and big games to look forward to, especially as this level and bearing in mind the games against Blackburn went pretty stale once the cheap ticket deal disappeared.

Back to Bury, et's be honest, the UniBolt can be a bit of a morgue for some games (not this season, I must point out) so the more big games, the better, even if it is Bury turning up for a cup final. For that reason alone, I do hope they can get back on their feet, but they need to end their internal feuding before they've got any chance of that whatsoever.

Regular since 75 pal. I think we first played Bury in the league around 85? Apart from a cluster of games around that period, they've barely registered in 40+ years and were way too tinpot for me to ever consider them as rivals.

Casino's point is a good one though. Living in Westhoughton, Wigan are near enough to piss me off and whilst almost as tinpot as Bury, their record since the millennium is pretty similar to ours.  For me, they're our biggest rival now. C*nts

Furry muff.

Completely agree about Wigan, as much as it pains me.  Beating them or losing to them (not in the Rumbelows Cup though) means far more than I want it to.

That's it in a nutshell.  If someone is playing a local derby, the factor that separates them from others is whether you would prefer to get 2 points to beat them or 3 points to beat someone else.  Managers wouldn't, they just want the points, they don't care who they come against.  I'd personally accept a point less to beat Blackburn, Burnley, PNE or Wigan because those games provides more than points, its about memories and occasions, which enthuses new and old supporters.  Tranmere, Oldham, Rochdale not in that bracket for me, just feels like any other game when we play them.

Back on topic. Can i be the first to suggest that this story is bollocks and nothing will come of it? There'll be no semi professional football in Bury next year, or the year after.  Unless of course, they're now counting Radcliffe as being part of Bury.  Which they cant really as we're Horwich Wanderers apparently 🙄

Bolton News still fills it’s pages with news agency type stuff. I only read it when visiting my mum’s but have lost count of the stories I’ve read which turn out to be some incident in Birmingham.

Today in the sport section I learned Harrogate Town FC had appointed some woman as CEO. Who gives a flying fuck?

I’ve mellowed a lot over the years, I don’t particularly look for anyone’s results hoping they’ve lost apart from Blackburn.

I do get a little glow when Wolves and Tranmere lose and still have a dislike for Aldershot whenever they re-form in any guise.

No other club really registers

The sad thing about Bury is their fans & their blinkered attitude to us. I'd have no view of them otherwise, just another small club stifled by proximity to big ones, plus Sky's belief that football started with the Premier League and stops, at best, half way down the Championship.

They went out of business for a fraction of what the Bury born, father an employee Neville brothers chucked at Salford. If they can't be arsed about them why should we ?

But I did. They had 100 years of history  they had something worth saving ... but sympathising with them simply led to their fans telling us to f'cough. So I fckd off. Bollox to 'em. That phoenix will never fly.

My dislike of clubs was always Stretford Untied & nothing else. However, Liverpool have joined them. I fckg despise them and their twatting fans.

Otherwise it's largely down to the little clubs who affect a rivalry with us ... which, I guess would be similar to us with the above two showers of shite in their fan's view. But Wigan, Salford & Tranmere are simply despicable clubs followed by despicable bastard fans. Add Morecambe & their 270 fans to that btw after last season. Oh, & whatever club Joey Barton is ruinibg at any one moment .

I added to this recently when I saw no-mark clubs with no history stick the boot in as we damn nearly went under. Doncaster, Peterborough, Lincoln simply saw us biting the dust as one less chance for relegation for them.

That taught me. Bollox to the rest of them & when those jumped up little scrotes of clubs start to sink after a couple of years overspending I won't even waste a thought on them.

Oddly Preston & Everton & even that red lot from Trafford gave us a helping hand when in our darkest moments. That's noteworthy.

So, yes. I hate today's opponents whoever, wherever & whenever that match is, all those in our division. I hate the above mentioned wankers & every referee since Uriah Rennie packed it in

It’s 2 years today they ceased to exist really, the day our Shazza saved us.  I think it’s more of a hope story than anything.  It certainly comes over more desperate than concrete anyhow, they owe the creditors far too much cash for some local benefactor to save them for the sake of a couple of thousand fans I don’t see it happening

Can anyone ever explain how GNev chose to takeover at Salfod rather than the club his father worked tirelessly to save? Pissed on his corpse. What a cockwomble.

Bizarre isn't it. They could have been heroes & even I would have given them a grunt of acknowledgement.

Surely Salford aren’t profitable either! Without the Class of 92 there would still be 40 on. Even Bury get more than 40.

It’s good to have land….

Bury's hatred of Bolton was laughable but any more laughable than our need to be at cambridge singing about Wigan?

Or Man Utd….

That sums up my exact thoughts, but I’m sure the chairman at Accrington needs adding to the cnut list

Nevilles both played for Bury boys to. Bury is part of their family history and like other post, it’s strange that they chose Salford over Bury? But to be fair it was not their mess to sort out. Nobody thought Bury would go out of business. Growing up as a kid, I used to love the rivalry with Bury. Going to school with many of there fans was great. They absolutely hated us with a passion. Remember beating them 1-0 at Burnden in playoffs. Their fans were distraught. Plus if they had any decent players, we always bought them. I would love to see Bury back in business. Had some fantastic nights watching the whites at Gigg Lane. Even though we struggled to get at times.
