Site Supporter Tonge moor green jacket Posted September 19, 2021 Site Supporter Share Posted September 19, 2021 Give the fella his own thread. Didn't realise just how many goals he'd scored in his career. What a machine he was in his time.
Burndens Bogs
Incredible strike rate had Jimmy Greaves - 132 goals in his first 4 seasons with Chelsea, 266 goals in 379 games for Spurs - 85 more than Harry Kane. 422 goals in 602 total club games. His strike rate for England was a goal every 1.24 games. He retired through injury aged just 31. Phenominal striker was Jimmy Greaves….RIP Edited September 20, 2021 by Burndens Bogs
Underpants
I was only looking at his stats the other day. Brilliant! Sad to see him in a chair and unable to speak after his stroke. Up there now with the quickly increasing '66 squad.
Site Supporter Biggish Dave Posted September 19, 2021 Site Supporter Share Posted September 19, 2021 Was he better than Andy Walker? Could he do it on a cold, Tuesday, February night in Barnsley? Never really seen much of him but his stats speak for themselves and many people of a certain vintage really seemed to rate him
Dimron
Never saw Greaves but his record stood for itself. I saw Walker loads of times... If a linesman or ref upset him you just KNEW it would be in the back of the net within 10 minutes
Site Supporter Steejay Posted September 19, 2021 Site Supporter Share Posted September 19, 2021 IIRC, he scored his 200th goal at Burnden. I got his autograph in the Topical Times annual once at Piccadilly station. Autograph nerd, aged 11. 🙄

Did Football Focus come on at a slightly earlier/later time ? , I seem to remember watching both

Members Rudy
My grandad views and opinion on football to me are the highest they can be. His favourite ever player was Nat but after Nat its Greaves. He puts him in the same category as Pele,Maradona Eusebio and since speaking to him tonight, Zidane and Messi He said Greaves is one of the few players no matter the score, circumstances or odds against you, if he was on the pitch you would ALWAYS have a chance of winning. In his opinion there wasn’t a more natural goal scorer. That’ll do for me
jayjayoghani
https://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2021/sep/19/jimmy-greaves-peerless-player-whose-legacy-is-etched-in-football-history?CMP=Share_AndroidApp_Other The ITV show Saint and Greavsie made Greaves and the strait-laced Ian St John – who never quite seemed to realise he was the sidekick in this double act – into unlikely stars and pioneers of a more irreverent sporting broadcast at a time of beige-suited Brians and Geoffs. The duo’s final show at the end of the 1992 European Championship featured a closing shot where Greaves and St John read their own P45 from the head of ITV then cycled off through the sunny streets of Copenhagen on a rickshaw singing This Could Be the Last Time by the Rolling Stones. jayjayoghani
Jimmy Greaves also wrote a nice little article when Nat Lofthouse died, warmed to him a bit more after it https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/other-sports/we-will-never-see-another-lionheart-like-1695044

Dr. Feelgood
A great player. As often said, without an injury & Sir Alf's parsimonious manner Greaves would have been in the England team in 66 & Hurst just a squad player. But that doesn't reduce our chance of winning it just the same. He had the ability to make the game look easy. Maybe, to him, it was. Nice guy too, if a tad "cheeky, chirpy, chipper Cockernee". You cannot begin to imagine the money he'd be on if playing these days.
RUREADY2ROLL
Went to the theatre of tourists for guest speaker night invited by an engineering company; guest speaker was Greavsie. Same night the two red shites were playing there in a reserve game. Went to the free bar before the entertainment commenced and the great man was there; not drinking alcohol though because he was already tea total. Told him I was Bolton and he told us and the others around the bar how they hated playing us because they knew they would be kicked all over the park. when he got up to speak he first said that he hadn’t heard of this engineering company but they must be massive to arrange this football match for us which brought a lot of laughs. He then went on to talk about his career and to my astonishment he talked about Bolton and joked about hiding behind his own centre halves at Burnden Park. top fellow and a lovely man; will be sadly missed. RIP Jimmy
deane koontz
Was watching a few clips of him earlier in the year. Looked like he was playing a different game to the rest of them. Shame there's not more footage of him. RIP

It showed that a lot of appearances and goals weren't officially recorded as they were post war friendly type affairs. Crikey, if he'd had a clear run then his official tally would have been huge.
