I looked at the handball. The wall was 10 yards from where it was touched. But, for the free kick, the ball was placed 2 yards further back.

If that's where the ref spotted it then the wall was, certainly, too far back. The various lines show that, vlearly. I'm just wondering if Shrewsbury moved the ball back once our line position was plugged.

Is there any reason why it wouldn't be a good idea to allow teams to move the ball back

Actually, the throw that led to the pen, the taker stepped at least 5 yards nearer his own goal before he took it

Why not, I guess

I think that's a bit harsh. I thought it was a good goal from them on Saturday, aided and abetted by the ref who had our wall 12 yards from the ball.

There was a point where it looked like the ref was striding out from the wall to where the free kick should be placed.     Am sure he did.  reflostplot

Interesting idea. Suppose not. Wall can still come forward as well if required?

Wasnt in the plan

Just feel its supposed to be a penalty against the defending team

If the team with the ball want it further from goal, why not

Not sure I agree. The offence is where the club is penalised from. That's where the kick should be.

But, taking your opinion to it's logical conclusion the defending team wall is required to be no closer than 10 yards from the kick, so they should then have the right to shuffle forward.

It’s gonna happen teams can’t keep letting him come inside to shoot. And if they do they’re fuckin stupid

Teams let Arjen Robben come inside on his left for the best part of 15 years. Easier said than done trying to stop it

That's my thoughts too. If being a bit further away improves the chances on getting the ball up and down, which would be a benefit of moving the ball, then it would be a treble punishment for the infringement in the first place.

Remember when indiscipline by the defending team resulted in the ball being placed ten yards closer to the goal? Players knew the optimum distance for the free-kick taker and would argue with the ref so the ball went forward and the taker couldn’t get the ball up and down in time.

Another shit rule change. I’m fairly sure the kicker wasn’t given the option to take the ten yard or not.

I swear I'd barely seen a single free kick hit the back of the net (for either team) in a Bolton game since Gary Madine somehow put one in the top bin. Already seen 3 this season. Was there a fourth somewhere I'm forgetting?

Sheehan scored one against MK Dons, then they scored one against us. Now Shrewsbury have scored one, didn't even look that good on the replay if you watch the Inside Matchday video at 9 minutes 10 seconds. Definitely not top corner and I'm not slagging Dixon off, maybe L1 level keepers just aren't at that level to save freekicks like that, but feel like that would have been saved in a higher division.

I remember thinking last season that not only did nobody score a free kick, for either side, but I don't recall one troubling the keeper much, like you say if they'd been great free kicks the keepers probably wouldn't have got near them.

I'm sure Crawford scored one the season before but I could be dreaming that, probably wishful thinking.

Going back 4 years Morais scored a cracker at Millwall.  Slim pickings!
