Crewe - Friday Night

Year on year, Crewe always seem to have a sizeable group of 15-18 year olds who then seemingly disappear and another lot emerge.

Presuming they move onto a bigger club, or leave the game completely

Or….. A a couple of goals from  Kachunga who has now got that confidence boost after a couple of good performances or Baka who is back in the mix

Good prediction!  I didn't realise he was playing at the time I posted pre match, pivotal in both goals.  Great to see us score a superb goal from open play, and without relying on any involvement from Dapo, for 2nd home league game running.

It’s a win but didn’t have much to beat.

Crewe were surpisingly, and reassuringly, awful.  Great to win and also great to see there's a team clearly worse than us on that showing, surprising they hadn't lost many away.  Even in league 2 the lower teams like Barrow, Harrogate, Grimsby were really tough opponents, that game seemed easier last night.

Strange , kinda, that we all watch the same match and see it so differently.
Thought we battered Crewe for 60 minutes then retracted like we were one nil up with promotion on the line.
Thats the first time in about 3 years that Ive seen us run out of steam with 30-25 mins to go , we looked goosed .

Izzy was mom but was dust after 65 and should have been subbed , Aimson is Mr solid , Dapo had an off day but by his standards was still good . Kachunga is starting to show how good he can be . John played well and its great to see him getting back to his best .

I still think Dixon is the most improved player of the season but by fuck we play ourselves into trouble far too often .

its also strange to read some people calling for 3 at the back when it was only when we abandoned that system that we went on a promotion run last season .

Some interesting stuff there.  Agree entirely we were all over them for an hour, we were playing half decent without being outstanding, and they were awful.  But then as you say we just stopped attacking for no apparent reason.  Also agree on Izzy, best player (followed by John who was excellent) but nackered well before the end.  Dapo sublime stuff in the first half, on a different level to everyone else, but a strangely subdued and 2nd half.

On Dixon, is the improvement his distribution.  That's superb, both kicking and throwing.  But another game where he had very little to save and he spilled one very badly nearly gifting them a goal.  He is what he is, he can't grow any taller, but I don't see improvement except arguably distribution?

And yes - 3 at the back - NO!!

Same team again for the replay and for Wycombe. Build up Amaechi’s fitness in both and maybe he’ll be ready to start against Doncaster or Cheltenham.

Kachunga will have to keep up the form he showed last night if he wants to keep his place now Xav is back. Although Evatt put Kachunga up front and took Baka off for him last night.

Happy with last night, it was exactly what we needed.

Very impressed with Aimson, there looks to be a far better balance with him alongside Santos than with Johnston. I like Johnston but he’s a footballer and not so much of a presence - when you add that alongside Santos, who funnily enough for a man mountain also hates playing against a big man (their sub gave him more trouble last night in 15 mins than Long did all game) then we’re often caused problems by long balls. With Aimson in there he tends to sort them out but can also play a bit too (some very decent diagonals over the full back) which surprises me.

Kachunga does some to be getting there, it was definitely his best game for us last night. He nearly had his goal in the first half when he had a great first touch but the keeper saved the shot well - once that comes I think he might kick on. I hope he does because I think there’s a half decent player in there somewhere.

Baka was the big difference for me though. It wasn’t in the obvious ways - I think he played pretty well but was probably a 6-7/10 - but his pace and strength just gave us something that we don’t have with Doyle. You can see the defenders drop deeper because they know he can do them in behind, which opens the game up for the likes of Sheehan and Lee and gives them more space. We also have a different out ball by playing it into channels or can fire a more hopeful one into his general direction to relieve some pressure and he generally holds it up well or lays it off. Add to that that he’s also got on the end of a cross and got a goal, which Doyle hasn’t done in the league for some time, and I just think that he’s the better option for the team. Given a run up top I think he’ll get better and better and will actually improve the 3 behind him as well.

Final shoutout for Isgrove who was fantastic. The cross to Baka in about the 2nd minute was as good as we’ve seen all season and he went on to create about 4 good chances just in the first half. Ran himself into the ground 2nd half and was blowing for the last 20 but considering he’s playing out of position he did a cracking job - he’s a great player to have in a squad.

Onwards and upwards - I just hope this is a start of a bit of a run that will keep us in the mix until we can strengthen in Jan.

Top post that Eddie.

Shame to see Kachunga being singled out by folk in the first half when that was one his best games. There is a decent player there, but I'm not sure he's our best option if we're going to push on.

Amaechi looked ace when he came on.

Isgrove was brilliant. But the reality is that it's a weak spot when we're playing against better teams. I would like to see us get a good right/wing back in January. Someone who can defend first of all.

No reason this squad can't keep us in the mix until we strengthen though.

If Brockbank can't get in the 11 when we don't have a RB, he's fucked and going knowhere with us, he's not L1 standard anyway, might just survive at L2 level or National League in Loan.

Definitely needs a loan move at the very least. Barely got game time last year and even less this year. Won’t improve without consistent minutes.

It’s a difficult one though because then we need to sign another full back either on loan or permanently and if Jones is back by January then whoever we try and sign isnt guaranteed a starting place, which makes it less attractive for a young Championship or PL teams fullback to come to us on loan.

Till we got the pen we weren’t winning that didn’t create a shot on target first half . We had a good 15 minutes terrible conditions at the end will take that

Funny how stats can paint a false picture.  We had a few opportunities where it just needs a touch, or even a bit of a lucky deflection, that could easily have been a goal especially first half hour.  They aren't recorded as shots on target.  Neither is the 20 yarder from Crewe that looked as if it hit bar and post in injury time.  Yet a pea roller collected by the keeper is a shot on target.   I thought our best spell was 1st half hour (Dapo, Isgrove, John playing well) but 2nd half was poor apart from the spell when we scored 2.  I'll take that though.

An observation from last night, the Crewe supporters seemed to be all male teenagers. As we walked across the hotel car park the esl mob with their battle cry, White Army were matching towards the away end.

All I can say is it's a good job the club introduced the membership scheme so they can farm the data it supplies.

I was there. A few kids chanting white army. Hardly the crime of the century.

As for Crewe they tried winding people up but quite rightly most just laughed and walked on.

Neil and his data can do one. Telling me I’m a customer for starters.

Not sure if it’s been covered but the new hotel rules were a piss take. Don’t take us for granted or we will soon piss off

Proper tinpot and too many red smarties

I think that applies to 90% of small clubs really.  Take your pick - Accy, Morecambe, Crewe, Fleetwood, Burton, Cheltenham, Salford, Harrogate.  The "vocal" fans are the teenagers, they will have older fans but they sit down and watch the game silently.

Hope kachunga kicks on

personally can’t see it against better opposition hence his better performances against dale/stockport & Crewe

Agree, his level appears to be that he's better than those teams, same with Doyle we know what they can do against that standard.  If we want to improve and be too good for the next level of teams IE knows he needs better, its not rocket science.

It was fresh to see genuine pace on the break near the end when we had Dapo-Kach-Xav on the pitch, Baka put himself about and got a goal which will do him the world of good too. Good to be getting options back as it's a busy period coming up to get us through to the window. Isgrove was MOTM although we didn't have much to defend against... Crewe were absolutely hopeless. The perfect match to regain some confidence and get three points on to shake the monkey off our backs of the dreadful league form we just put in.

What were the new hotel rules pal?  Didn’t go in last night.

remember that Crewe midweek cup game - they were bang  for it and the Main Street was quite interesting for a while.

Residents only after the final whistle aka 10pm. Can guess who came up with that. It was pissing it down and a bit of a pisstake in my opinion.

Didn’t know about the after game drinking but nothing had changed pre-game.

Wonder if it was more about staff numbers. The bar was heaving with staff before the game. I doubt they’d clock off and wait two hours for the final whistle.

Never been allowed in hotel after a game? I thought that was the case so went for a swift one in Harvester while traffic went. was OK in there
