At least the latter had the good grace to start calling it 'Mediterranean' rather than 'Italian' - after about seven years. It was originally Italian-owned. Per Frandsen and family/friends used to regularly half-fill the gaff on Friday or Saturday nights. Roma was the only genuine born/bred Italian in the town centre, Toscana were Italians but naturalised here. The less said about the one in the basement under the antiques centre behind The Blue Boar the better, although the Scarface style tacky decor was good. The problem with Italian restaurants in the town centre was the fact they were in the town centre, they spent half the time wrangling pissed up fuckers and showing them the way to The Leena instead. Always had good meals in Toscana, bit gutted when they sold out to McCauleys. Quote
MickyD Posted October 22, 2021 Posted October 22, 2021 My restaurant of choice, although not Bolton but close enough, is Toby Inn on moors through Edgworth and Crowthorn. Top food. Mostly English and Italian. Quote
Not in Crawley Posted October 22, 2021 Posted October 22, 2021 Be good to know as to be honest we've struggled to have a decent meal out when we've been back home - not counting curry places or decent fish and chips. Had a tapas (admittedly years ago) near XRecords. Still goes down as the worst meal I've ever had. Few years ago struggled even in Manchester, ended up at the Malmasion which was shit as well. Had a bite to eat at that Ivy place, that was ok. Quote

Not in Crawley Posted October 22, 2021 Posted October 22, 2021 Now Edinburgh - there is a city with a decent choice of places to eat. Had some amazing meals out there, that also didn't cost the earth. Enjoyed a lovely meal at Fishers in Leith Quote

I think they were at the University studying and papai (ou papais) had paid for the franchise on the Bolton one (there were a few - one in Darwen, elsewhere too) to enable them to earn their keep during their studies (probably about 9 hours a week maximum knowing Bolton Uni). Anyhow she was the most surly girl in Christendom, like Nelly Furtado sucking a lemon and smelling a Webbox Dogfart... Used to put her demeanour down to being Portuguese and earning her corn flogging 'Spanish' food, maybe having to listen to pissed up idiots trying out their Spanglish and having to nod and smile. But no, I encountered her in The University a few times and she had a cob on there too. The food was rubbish, only went once. They served the girl (handful) I was eating with cold tinned peaches with crap shop ice cream on a hot plate when she asked for flambed oranges and ice cream. I thought "fair enough, they had a go" until I got the bill, £6.50 for this culinary masterpiece. La Tasca wasn't much better tbh, everything came from a central kitchen in Manc, only the bread-based stuff and paella was cooked from scratch, everything else just reheated in a bank of mikes. Had a Sherry in there once (hello sailor) - could've pickled walnuts in it. Sent it back, still got billed for it. Most of the chefs (or, more accurately, 'reheaters' - although they could cook, just weren't allowed to) were Portuguese or from Portuguese Africa (via Portugal). Pissed-upness breeds contempt for the customer in our town centre eateries imo, always has, it's no coincidence that two of the half decent places are/were dry (Sizzling Palate) or shut up relatively early (Laibaz). I imagine it was a smoking area perhaps? You didn't smoke? My niece 'socially' smokes (31, I reckon D cup)...She looks like a wally, she still does it in a 'look at me I'm smoking!' style of a fourteen year old. She also barely takes the smoke into her lungs but takes big mouth drags then puffs out giant plumes of smoke like a fagash Lil' guppy fish. Do it properly or not at all. He ended up buying one of those Nicorette idiot whistles, had to listen to him moaning it tasted like burning tyres for six hours. "What, y'mean it tastes like actual cigarettes?" Quote

Youri McAnespie Posted October 22, 2021 Posted October 22, 2021 It's baffling. The main entrance at Townleys is a sight... Folk on multiple drips stood in dressing gowns having a tab. I saw one bloke in hozzy issue Guantanamo PJ's and slipper socks halfway down Minerva Road once. I thought he might be an escapee from k2 (the ward not the World's 2nd highest peak) so I stopped and did my civic duty and asked if he was OK... "Yeah, I'm fine, just nipping for some cigs..." It was about minus 3°c. Sure enough he pitched up at the OneStopShop a few minutes after me for 40 B&H Blue Superkings and a lighter. Upon leaving with my provisions, I saw him staggering back to his deathbed puffing away - I half expected him to have about 12 fags in his gob at once, like in the films. (Insert gay porn joke here). Had an argument with a patient once. Asked her not to smoke whilst I dressed her bilateral leg ulcers. Literally dropped ash on me as I was bent down infront of her. stevieb Posted October 22, 2021 Author Posted October 22, 2021 Smokers should be refused NHS treatment for any cancer or respiratory illness. They've had plenty of notice it's bad for their health. They're a drain on the system. There's alternatives out there that will help. 💣 Quote

Should've snatched it off her and stubbed it out in the wound. Cauterising it being a Brucie bonus. Then beat her to a pulp with her Samoyed Turner (or whatever they're called). The revenue from smoking exceeds the treatment cost. It also kills off more prematurely smokers that may need more expensive treatments if they'd quit and lived longer. Can't find it ATM. Seen people at death's door with respiratory problems, can't think of many worse ways to go tbh (without torture etc. being involved). I sleep with the light on if I have a head cold and can only mouthbreathe. Edited October 22, 2021 by Youri McAnespie Quote
