I've read that full fact on smoking before, I always felt like it was saying its hard to measure the cost or the benefit either way.. round here loads of the scratters buy illegal cigarettes unwittingly from organised crime gangs, I've always wondered where that would fit in.. pimped up vapes are the new stuff, crime gangs selling them to kids, called geek bars.. anyway food wise in bolton i thought statement was good in westhoughton but I think that's closed. Red lion in hawkshaw is nice, definitely votes for Toby inn, Rosa and cherry tree as mentioned.

Before Brexit, I used to be totally stumped why smoker folk didn't buy £2.99 Ryanair flights to Poland a couple of times a year and just bring back six month's worth legally...

Twenty decent cigs used to be about two quid over there.

That said the tramps probably didn't have the £400 odd quid for the cigs/flight/cheap hotel for a night or two...

Or were too fucking bone idle.

It's baffling.

The main entrance at Townleys is a sight...

Folk on multiple drips stood in dressing gowns having a tab.

I saw one bloke in hozzy issue Guantanamo PJ's and slipper socks halfway down Minerva Road once.

I thought he might be an escapee from k2 (the ward not the World's 2nd highest peak) so I stopped and did my civic duty and asked if he was OK...

"Yeah, I'm fine, just nipping for some cigs..."

It was about minus 3°c.

Sure enough he pitched up at the OneStopShop a few minutes after me for 40 B&H Blue Superkings and a lighter.

Upon leaving with my provisions, I saw him staggering back to his deathbed puffing away - I half expected him to have about 12 fags in his gob at once, like in the films.

(Insert gay porn joke here).

Was in the Grapes Farnworth very early doors a few years ago and a bloke turns up in his jamas asking for a pint. The young lady behind the bar was shit scared and asked me to stay until someone came for him. I had to ring K2 and ask if they had one missing. Half an hour later ambulance rolls up and takes him away.

Goodness me, seems quite a few women where spiked last night in the hell hole that is the Swan. One woman found in another bars toilets with her knickers and trousers down. Was only in there the other week.

What was he supping and where did he keep his money?

When we were kids my mate lived in a house next door to a Church - all the escaped loonies used to knock on thinking it was the Vicarage seeking sanctuary...

Another mate had a phone number one digit different to Bolton Central Police Station - he'd sometimes answer wrongly dialled calls and put on a gruff voice and listen to whatever complaint, usually kids sitting on garden walls, then give them a foul-mouthed load of abuse and accuse them of wasting police time etc.

Getting all the way to The Grapes is a decent escape though - they normally collar them before they hit Plodder Lane or Bradford Road.

Doesn't say much for The Canary if they walked past it and opted for The Grapes instead.

I was at the hospital once and some bloke pulled me up and asked if I knew where he could make a complaint...

I was talking and guiding him towards Patient Services when this scruffy herbert with a tache and growth, favvered Bill Decker the m-m-murderer asked me what I was doing.

I thought he was a loony at first until I clocked his I.D. - the respectable looking would-be complainer was his charge being taken for a wander - not t'other way round.

I dunno if it's a chicken and egg type thing but you get some odd sorts working up there on Fir Tree or Oaky Wood or whatever they call the K-Wards now.

I don't knowhow he got there, only how he got 'home'. He'd no money but the frightened young lady gave him half of Fosters on the understanding that I would stay until the ambulance turned up. I wouldn't normally frequent Cromptons aka Grapes but I was looking for a spark to do me a 'foreigner'.

I've seen them in the shop at the bottom of Minerva loads of times when we lived on Kingsland Rd and once in Lords school aka Brooklyn carpark.

Now Edinburgh - there is a city with a decent choice of places to eat.

Had some amazing meals out there, that also didn't cost the earth.

Enjoyed a lovely meal at Fishers in Leith

Fishers is decent. If you’re ever down leith again go to ship on the shore or kings walk for seafood.
although seeing @Spiderphotos of his seafood spread earlier this week I think mussel and steak bar needs. Visit also

Indeed

Edinburgh is genuinely awash with quality food places.

the Mussel and Steak bar on DiagonAlley is amazing. Don’t bother with a starter because the portion sizes are unreal. Spend the money on an upgrade to your wine.

Best advice I can give for anyone going to Edinburgh? Have @Escobarpat the end of your phone. He’s like the concierge at a 5 star hotel.

Just booked a couple of restaurants in Edinburgh for end of November/early December. Not made of money compared to you lot, mind. Makar's Mash Bar and Howie's on Waterloo Place. Determined to finally get to The Pakora Bar as well. Dare say we'll have an afternoon down by the shore at Leith and my wallet is already shaking at the thought.

Pakora bar is decent enough and worth a visit.
makars Ive never done as don’t fancy the menu despite loving mash especially pie and mash.
Howies gets consistently decent reviews but haven’t been for many many years.

When you’re down Leith try and grab a pizza at razzo on great junction street. You won’t be disappointed.

I didn't find Edinburgh all that expensive for a city break, to be honest.

Went in a few boozers and the prices were decent. Entry to the castle is £13 which is brill value.

Didn't bother with the hop on/off bus as we were in no rush and preferred to walk.

There's even a Van Gogh and 3 Gaugins in the Art Gallery, which was a lovely surprise. (free entry)

There's a fair few beggars about though. Or "Scots" as they call them up there 🙂

I always tend to do quite well on the hotels (albeit I tend to use the same Travelodge - only sticking my head down after all) and trains (as opposed to naive 17 year old me paying £50+ even 17 years ago!).

Must admit the restaurants I looked at on the Shore seemed to be higher end at £90-£110 but I'm sure we'll find summat a bit more in our price range! Howie's do an early evening menu for £18 for 2 courses which is very reasonable tbf. Edinburgh was the first place I paid more than a fiver for a pint a few years ago but I'd call that par for the course these days.

Not been up since November 2019 which is probably the longest I've had between visits since I was about 10.

Bistro 341 in Egerton is pretty decent. Used to be JJ's (not that one...)

Is that near the cricket club in a terraced row?

My Mrs lived in Sqeetland for a long time, we have good mates, and a good time every time we go back.

Although, I'd never live in Edinburgh, Glasgow is the better city by far.
