It really isn’t jobs for the boys. It’s working with someone he can trust (not easy in football) and someone who will work well with the players

There were 2 reasons we fell away so badly last season. One (huge) reason was injuries. This appointment should be your clue as to the other.

I'm struggling to get worked up about an assistant appointment in all honesty. 

It's a little 'jobs for the boys', sure, Gilks and Herd worked out well enough though.

I'd have thought most managers assemble their own back room staff mostly comprised of folk they know and trust

That’s a reasonable point. A reasonable response might be how many other teams, require two assistant managers, as well as a manager and coach?

Does it really matter what others do? Why don’t we try to follow our own path instead?

You’d think we’d spunked our entire transfer budget on someone putting out the cones and bibs when in reality all of the coaching staff will be on relative buttons compared to the playing squad. If IE feels it’s necessary - and let’s not pretend he won’t have had to sell this to the board - then that’s good enough for me.

Well, it clearly isn't one vacancy.

Whether it turns out to be a good or a bad appointment, it's for the club to decide how many they want as part of the management team.
