There was supposed to be a bolton Catholic sixth form, they were hoping to have it at cuthberts but the salesian brothers had a tantrum and they just had thornleigh sixth form instead.. shame that I know me and a lot of others from Joeys would have gone to a bolton Catholic sixth form but didn't bother with thornleigh sixth form. The open day they couldn't have made it more obvious they didn't want us there

Although it's on the Thornleigh site, it's official name is Bolton Catholic Sixth Form Centre (or it was when I was there in the late 90's)

Pity this thread has deteriorated into a school dick waving competition.

RIP Tony.

There was always what we thought what was an urban legend that Webber was a ex-pro footballer And had won some sort of honour.

Every time you asked him if it was true he would say “if I was an ex footballer do you think I’d be coaching you bunch of toerags”

Its only the link that Casino posted that I’ve actually realised it was true. How humble.

Bloody hell only just clicked who it was, only knew him as Mr Webber, was my teacher at thornleigh college and my football coach for college. We won a competition with him, in my head I think it was called the Manchester cup or referred to that as that.

An absolute master at man management and getting the best out of you

He was a top top coach, tough and brutally  honest but if you worked hard he took a liking to you he had no time for anyone who didn’t give a 100%. I always liked him

Sad Sad news im genuinely gutted and annoyed it took me so long to realise.

Sleep Well Mr Webber.

Sixth Form cup?

That'll be the Mackereth Cup.

It was the Greater Manchester Schools Trophy in my day. Quite a deal given the area's footballing heritage and interest.

The finals were usually at a professional ground ... Burden, Gigg, Oldham, Stockport.

We lost in the semi's to Derby School, Radcliffe with one Wayne Entwistle their centre forward.

Oh yes, definitely 'old money'. Mid 70's.

QEGS & Blackburn St. Elizabeth's, Burnley Grammat & St. Theodoes  Preston Catholic College, Bootle Salesian College were all on our fixtures but non of those were Gtr. Manchester. But there was still a very wide bit of geography in Gtr. Manchester.

Who ran the teams at North Bolton sixth form?

Played a time or two for third team (iirc) but only real memory is sustaining a bad ankle sprain and no fucker being available for help. Ended up hobbling up SDR to get the bus home. :)
