The slower version of ‘when the x go marching in’

The slower version has only been sung in last 10 years or so, notably by Spurs and Southampton.  We've never really gone down that road, it sounds too forced IMO.  The staccato version Leyther Matt referenced is where one group chants "Oh when the Whites" and another responds "Oh when the Whites" then "Go Marching In"...."Go Marching In" before both lots sing the rest of it - it was popular on Burnden Paddock in about last 15 years there.  Definitely spoiled the impact of it.

Absolutely spot on (and I've learned a new word, legato, thanks).  When I heard it upto about 1981 it was sung with real attitude, like it was a massive statement of fact.  I still like the song for its tradition and sound but its all a bit half hearted in comparison.  I always join in, for old times sake and in the vain hope it never dies out (same reason I join in with We're By FAR The Greatest Team).

I know a little bit about this subject. The ability to actually sing at a football match coincided with the participants coming from backgrounds where singing was a big part of schooling. School assemblies came with hymn singing.
Fast forwards a few years and communal singing is no longer a thing. Because of this we end up with less singing and more short, sharp tuneless chanting. When there’s an actual pitch to the song, some lads are not comfortable at all in trying to sing at the same pitch as the folk around them and are often so out of tune it’s fucking awful.

I don’t know how old you are but you’re wrong about the slower version being last 10 years ago. Try 40+ years ago.

The slow version is a bit if a dirge imo.

At Burnden it was always sung at a faster pace, more suited to a football chant.

I stand corrected.  I have only been aware of it in last 10 years, but it might be 100 years old for all I know.  Spurs were the first team I heard singing it, at White Hart Lane and it was impressive with the whole ground joining in, never heard Bolton try it till about 5 years ago and it soon petered out due to lack of interest.

No wonder, because it’s shite.

The tempo isn’t perculiar to football circles then.

From Wiki -

The earliest versions were slow and stately, but as time passed, the recordings became more rhythmic, including a distinctly up-tempo version by the Sanctified Singers on British Parlophone in 1931.

I'm fairly certain the slow version was never sung at Burnden in my time (77 onwards).  The normal paced one was sung routinely if we were winning, it was a unique sound that I've never heard at other grounds.

We are banning fans for celebrating and now singing is basically cringey.

right laugh going a game

Shut the fuck up an be grateful we still have a club...

And that you can still attend games....

And that we employ ticket office staff

.. But you have to pay ticket master a booking fee...

And you have to sign up for a membership scheme no one knew we needed....

But you can still sit where you want... Unless it's in the only corner that's had atmosphere for the last 20 years.

I remember a group of lads in the pub opposite Burnden singing the slow version before the last game.

Another song which became a chant was You'll Never Walk Alone which, despite the Liverpool connotations was a popular song choice at Bolton games. Then scarves,  usually tied around wrist,  would be circled overhead,  helicopter fashion,  as the singing became a series of short chants

And You'll ne

I remember being awe struck as a young lad in the 70s on the Manny Road, watching a packed embankment all twirling their scarves overhead. It looked ace!

Not sure when or why it became redundant at Bolton. Was it because of its connection to Liverpool? Celtic maybe?

I doubt it could simply be connection to other clubs otherwise Bolton would be mute.

Was sung at the Reading play off final, wasn’t it? Maybe even last game at Burnden, but probably for nostalgia purposes I suppose
