I think the owners are just fucking the EFL about and time wasting. There is no money to pay wages so they’re coming up with hang on a minute while we sell it bullshit . The EFL are falling for it instead of implementing another points deduction and follow there own rules

Plus they can delay any HMRC payments if there is a takeover going on.

Do we really believe there are 4 interested parties in that basket case of a club?

Nah thought not, it’s all a smokescreen to try and buy time.

There probably are

It's whether they're still interested after seeing the books that's the question

Okay but why is it run as a separate company

From what I've read, all they've done is sub-contracted the running of the catering kiosks to Sodexo.

So

they don’t own the ground

it needs millions spending on it

sold off match day income

small fan base

not a lot of assets including players

will lose most of their players

debts piling up

Its not looking good even if another party comes in

it will at least another five million and then a lot more going forward

oh dear

My suspicion is they're using the 'sale' as a delaying tactic.

Hoping they can sell their whole squad for a few million. Pay off their wages and sign players that they can actually afford to pay while living within their means. And have an outside chance of staying up.

This all has quite a few similarities to the late Spring/Summer of 2019 at Bolton. This is their Bassini moment. However they've yet to find an Auntie Sharon/Michael James/FV. Even if they do, such a combination will only be able to fund what their dismal fanbase allows and the first job will be to settle the ever lengthening list of liabilities.

As I've said before on here I'm wary because these have a habit of squirming their way out of trouble, even if later on down the line the promised land has proved to be a mirage in the long run. However the more you sit back and look at it, the more you realise just how deeply in the clag they are this time.

If they survive they'll have to punch at their weight rather than above it for the first time since the late 1990s. At which point they're automatically well in our slipstream where they belong.

#believe.

The 'delaying tactic' I can believe, but highly doubt the rest of your suspicion. For a start, why would anyone pay a fee for one of their players when they're likely to be a free agent in a few weeks?

Don't feel that we're anywhere near crunch time either.

This is just the beginning. It's not really had time to all unravel yet. They've paid May's wages I think? so it's been only about a month that the shit has started to hit the fan.

The sale process could be expedited but I imagine with the shitshow going on and uncertainty, it's going to take a while for any legitimate bidder to do their due diligence and any quick sale wouldn't guarantee any sort of longevity. Unless someone with more money than sense decides to be their new Dave Whelan.

Still a long way to go and it could get much worse before it gets any better for them, at least I hope so.

Can't see a quick death happening, EFL will dock them points and make an example of them but they'll give them a chance to start the season. Think with Bury they had missed the first 5 or 6 games before they finally got expelled?

I mean that is the gamble they might be making - not saying that it will happen in reality. But if I was the owner, plan A would be sell the club and run.

But plan B would be hoping I could get to the transfer window and sell as many players as I could to recoup any losses. Then sell the club or put into admin.

However, as you imply there is the risk that the players will tear up their contracts from not being paid or, if they do stay on, with every club knowing Wigan's position they won't get anywhere near full value. They still could raise a decent amount from player sales with 15 players contracted past the end of this season (https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/wigan-athletic/kader/verein/1071)

They may be incompetent owners but they've still had enough funds and nouse to get them promoted and paid for the most part while being there, so I'm sure they'll have some exit strategies up their sleeves...

I thought they had not paid the players only the under23s and staff ?

Correct. First team and some non playing staff ie: the management team have not been paid. There’s “assurances” it will be done by Friday. Then there’s another pay day in 3 weeks

Plus, if they've given the pay slips, but not yet paid the actual ... y'know ... pay in this month where they must pay the present wage, plus somebody said a double wage payment AND 1.25 of the same sum again.

So 3¼ month's wages ... yet are so cash strapped they're promising today's wage tomorrow.

I'd not put much money on that happening.

It isn’t. It used to be when it first opened, but one of Whelan’s last acts was to transfer the stadium ownership in to the club’s name. As @Cheese says, Sodexo come in to it as they effectively run the matchday operation. Bus in stewards from as far as Coventry and in return they retain all of the concourse profits.

Yeh did it for an upfront lump sum to forego any future money

I knew very little about this Wigan/Barnsley dislike so I went on Barnsleyways. This post gave me a bit of a twinge.

We are going to be in the hunt for a new rival.

I nominate Barnsley next.
