Site Supporter MickyD Posted September 10, 2022 Site Supporter Posted September 10, 2022 I’ve done a couple of local non-league v league FACup games. Chorley v Wolves at Burnden where the enjoyment of the game was more anti-Wolves than pro-Chorley. Accrington v Scunthorpe at Turf Moor, again, no enjoyment other that watching a shit game David v Goliath… imagine Scunthorpe being a Goliath! Quote

I did Wigan v Northwich FA cup game back in the 70s was a cracking game, decent crowd on, thankfully my heart had already been stolen by BWFC otherwise I might have ended up being a pie eater. Quote

Even worse, if they played each other this season Accrington would be the giant! 4 years ago Stockport of National League North went to Yeovil of league 2, and knocked them out of the FA Cup in a "giant killing". Just seems odd when smaller clubs lose to bigger clubs and its called a giant killing. Like if Notts County beat Fleetwood or Morecambe now. Off top of my head I can't think of us claiming a "scalp" when it was a team far smaller than us, thankfully. Would be the case if we beat Bournemouth or Brentford, I'd rather we didn't have that "indignity". Quote

Ridiculously I did both Wigan-Northwich home and away! I had a load of mates at school who were going to Northwich so I went along for the fun of the FA Cup 1st round (I went to any game going in them days in my defence). Around 10k on for the first and 3rd games, the first was abandoned after an hour with Wigan 3-0 up and when they played it again, it was 2-2, so they had the replay at Wigan. In them days cup games usually attracted a bigger crowd than the league, paying the same prices, not cheaper tickets and smaller crowds like now. Quote

Dr. Feelgood Posted October 29, 2022 Posted October 29, 2022 Could it be more Pythonesque ? Bury FC Supporters’ Society (BFCSS) and Bury AFC’s Shakers Community Society (BAFCSCS). "Splitters !!!" One with 771 members, 63% saying "yes" and one with 1,003 where 97% said yes ... so it fails by a margin of 3.7% of the 771. That's 28 people of one of the groups, or 1.58% of the whole total. You could have a sitcom based on this. Quote

Once went to Leigh v Barrow RL. Donno if Leigh were good or Barrow were shite but i think they stopped counting at about 80odd to nil. Probably wigans 1st ever season in the league went with a mate (just out of curiosity) to see them play tranmere (didn't even know where tranmere was), can't remember the score and not many there but loads of aggro between what looked like school boys. We found it funny but left early. Around the same time i once went to Stoke city , they played utd, utd won 3-0 and stoke fans seemed terrified. Quote
paulhanley Posted October 30, 2022 Posted October 30, 2022 Went to watch an FA Cup First Round tie between Slough and Harrogate Railway many years ago, it was a surprise 1-2 away win with a large Yorkshire following. No trouble but quite a lot of verbal hostility. Hopeless floodlights and the game was completed in semi darkness FA Cup First Round weekend is pretty special. Not sure there's much else like it in the world. Before the internet the Sunday papers were a treat. The results page was stacked with fixtures of teams of whom we'd barely heard playing league sides. Real tussles on misty, gloomy November days at grounds not much better than parks football. The only other decent non-Bolton first round tale I have is watching Preston v Blackpool in 1994 - a true grudge match. Quote
Moderators Carlos Posted October 30, 2022 Moderators Posted October 30, 2022 It’s brilliant, Bury FC doesn’t exist as a football entity, the people with the name and Gigg Lane lost their council funding. A car crash. Quote
Moderators Carlos Posted October 30, 2022 Moderators Posted October 30, 2022 Like they say: We are Bury AFC, and we have games to run, to watch, and to play. Starting this weekend. Quote

Take Hunt Off Posted October 30, 2022 Posted October 30, 2022 Unfortunately lived in Burton on Trent for a few years .Went to an FA cup fixture when they were at home to Bury in the late seventies .Burton were very non league then most of the locals following Derby Co. Remained fairly neutral until Alan Waldron got pole-axed (he was almost at the end of his career & that tackle didn’t help) Anyway was a decent game Bury won 2-0. John Ritson played for Bury as well . Quote
