The place is going to be bouncing. Never thought we would sell this one out with the train strike.. immense support.

I think trains are more or less sorted

Bolton to London via Northern and Avanti West  are ok

London to Ipswich - if Greater Anglia follow last weeks timetable they are running one an hour on the Norwich line

Yes it is only 20 minutes from Ely into Cambridge

Excellent I'll do that then cheers mate.

As Split My Fare wont allow refunds only rebookings despite strike action, and with the Cambridge game being over 12 weeks after the Ipswich game, I've had to rebook the tickets for a random Saturday date in between now and then as a placeholder.

Then I'll have to cancel them and rebook again when tickets on the Cambridge date become available, each time losing the booking and savings fee from each "refund".

Developed into a costly old nightmare this strikes business.

See, I’m convinced  that we’ll win.

I’ll be devastated if we draw.

Not sure how I’m getting home, mind.

We could win but we could easily lose this. I think you need to temper your expectations for one of the tougher fixtures (on paper) this season.

Ok Auntie Farrelli, I promise not to cry if we lose. 🙄

i'm expecting Ipswich to rip us a new one in the first 10 mins and probably even be a goal up.

I'd be happy with a draw, it is what it is though - as long as we don't give away 3 pens and have 2 sent off, it will be better than my last trip down there.

That's how I'm expecting the game to start.  My feeling is they'll be all over us until they score, whether that's after 5 minutes or 35.  As everyone knows we have a habit of starting away games slow and conceding first.  Then we'll get hold of the game and create half chances, but if they've got 28k backing them to hold onto a lead for an hour, it will be very tough.  Either way its not going to be season defining for either team.

Southampton on the opening day of 97/98 season - I wore an illuminous yellow Diadora tee-shirt. Didn't half attract the wasps in the beer garden in that boozer near the Dell, was it called The Winston?

Enjoyed both Grimsby games to be fair. The 0-0 game was our first back in the 2nd tier so it was good to get off to a solid enough start.

Leicester was a cracker too - missed a mates wedding to go to that. Think I made the right decision, I still got to the night do.

Notts County away first game of 1980/81 - don't particularly remember it but it's where it all began for me. A 6 year old boy stood on the open terrace in the sunshine, oblivious to the rollercoaster i'd just set foot on.

Saturday marks the start of season number 43

Was notts county when we sold whatmore the night before to join up with frank?

Reading this  got me thinking about previous memorable opening day fixtures, a topic possibly worth a thread of its own , and before referring to the record books to look up the dates and scores , and leaving aside the Wycome game which will be forever remembered for reasons of its own, these are the ones that came to mind.

Burnley away in 77/8 - promotion season 1-0 win, massive Wanderers following, Trinity street packed at 11am, fans running amok all over Burnley Town Centre. Great day out.

Bristol City home 78/9 - first ever first division game, got beat 2-1 by a team that we did not really regard as being "first division" opponents, euphoria and excitement evaporated in minutes and realised it was going to be a long and tough season.

Grimsby Away 94/5 - 3-3 - great entertaining first game  of the season

Wimbledon 95/6 lost 3-2 first game in premier League - probably hottest day ever for watching a match

Leicester 2001/02 that amazing 5-0 win - awesome performance

only one i have any memory of from the 80s was Southend in 88 and that was not for the football.

Be interesting to read of those that others recall

I was at those Grimsby, Wimbledon and Leicester games.  Common denominators were it was absolutely roasting at all 3, and they were all our first games after promotion, away end bouncing, around 4k at the first 2.

Less glamorous was the home game in 83 v Wimbledon coincidentally, our first game in Div 3 in that era, 2-0 win in front of 3,700, less than we took to Grimsby etc.  But I was buzzing with the win.

Then losing home to Bristol Rovers in 84, depressing.

In 85 we were beating Rotherham most of the game and playing well, only for them to equalise last couple of minutes, I was absolutely gutted as I was convinced we were going on a promotion charge

86, home defeat to Swindon 1-2, again so gutted as I thought we'd improved but of course went down.

87 in Div 4, still couldn't win, 1-1 v Crewe

88 that defeat at Southend.  What a decade!

No.  Whatmore scored our consolation that day in a 1-2 defeat.

Possibly the following year that he left? We lost at Chelsea on the opening day then. 0-2 in front of 16,000.
