Sheehan coming back from best part of a year out will need time. We ended up with Tequila in the Lee role yesterday, Morley )who is a great player btw) and MJ both knackerred. And Sheehan is not a midfield bastard 😁
It is all about opinions and not sure how much of yesterdays game you saw or if you went ( not a dig btw if you did n't) but second half we were getting over run and had nothing on bench , hopefully the 'knock' Dempsey got was an injury rather than a knock on the door but he has not had a run in the side yet and I just think an extra body there would make a real difference.

I didn't see it and understand well that it will take time for Sheehan to settle, just pointing out that with Dempsey out and Sheehan due I don't think we can simply go around collecting midfielders. Especially after being stretched by a team who will be there or thereabouts come May.

I feel that a Karl Henry style hardman with footballing ability is a miss in the squad but maybe Evatt doesn't.

Fair enough. I think the introduction of 5 subs means thinking may change. You are basically changing half your team.

On a separate note Ipswich have a lot of fans who wear the kit and I thought they were very quiet for most of the game which surprised me.

To be fair we never shut up and gave them the chance to pipe up…. That was some effort by our lot, by god our fans were up for it yesterday.

Regarding yesterdays performance we didn’t control possession like we normally do, that didn’t help our legs and in particular our midfield, also very hot down there, we did well to hang on for the point with only 1 CDM available and even when Dempsey is in the squad I’d like another specialist CDM to be drafted in as and when we can find one to fit our budget.

Arse went a couple of times when they broke in the box and Santos won the ball off them. He is still looking a bit cumbersome and WILL give penalties away this season. But he was pretty immense when needed. Harping on and on like a broken record… he needs to be scoring half a dozen goals a season. That corner from Morley that was met by Dapo - it needed a “Big Sam” bullet header from our centre half. I really do think this is part of his game that could be pushed and pushed. Unless of course, the master stroke is for him to be the decoy for someone else to pile in with the header. Would love us to try the nearpost flick-on corner from time-to-time, used to be a great source of goals.

I doubt Dapo would ever be happy with being an impact sub. I wonder if starter at home games and impact at away games would work.

We did it a few times last season. Evatt has told them its a long long season and everyone will play a part. For me, it’s got to be a horses for courses approach - especially with tough away games. He looked quite lively early on and they were definitely aware of him and unsure how to handle. I think that would have been an interesting scenario later in the game. With Evatt patting him on the back and telling him “go out there son and win us the game!”.

I still think Dapo is more dangerous down the left and cutting in which means we can have either Bod or Baka up top with Dion. As for midfield it’ll be interesting to see where Toal will play when fit. I’m presuming he’ll replace Johnson so with our weakness in Defensive midfield maybe we could groom Johnson or Iredale for that position? I like Johnson but he strikes me as slightly small for a CB and might do better in midfield longer term.

I agree he’s better on the left but think Evatt wants to go with 3-5-2 so no place for Dapo unless he’s playing either up top or number 10, his body language wasn’t great either when Lee went off and Baka was passing on info from the manager.

Thought MJ did ok but was over run in that midfield second half. He never stopped tho and credit to him.

Starting to get a bit uneasy about Dempsey. He should be a key player but it's been one thing after another with him. Injuries and now this off the field business.  Hoping he us actually going to get a run in the team at some point.

Aye, I've still not seen anything from Dempsey to suggest he'll be a regular starter or someone who can make a difference

Not even sure who he'd replace from MJ, Morley and Lee

We need a midfield bastard ! Being saying it all summer !

I’ve been saying and thinking this for years! But do they actually exist anymore? With the powder-puff rules and regs these days, looking at an opposing player gets you a yellow card these days. Long gone are the crunching tackles where you took the ball and the man – moments that I felt were just as skilful as back flicks and mazy dribbles.

I also agree with you and Ani Smiley, we need a true strongman and ball winner in midfield but that doesn’t mean he has to be a leg breaker. As you say, you can’t do that today but winning 50/50 balls and having body strength doesn’t mean you can’t win tackles fairly. The ability to break up opponents attacks is critical for any team and we’ve lacked that for years. Winning the ball then giving it to the creative players is what all successful teams have done and I feel that’s just the element we’re missing to turn a good squad into a winning one. The problem is where do you find these players as there aren’t many about which is why I suggested we possibly create our own from within.

I agree its frustrating, and fairly incredible, that he never scores or looks like scoring, but I don't see it changing.  In some ways we may be underestimating the skill involved in scoring from headers, directing the ball accurately whilst getting enough power, whilst getting away from your marker.  Bod has that ability, it doesn't just hit him, he knows how to finish with his head; ALF had it, maybe Madine did although he missed enough too.  Santos has a lot of qualities but he wasn't born with that one.  I would consider not even sending him up for corners because if he wins the ball its normally a goal kick to the opposition, they probably want him to win it!
