Bolton V Aston Villa League Cup

Great effort last night, the lads put a real shift in. Right from the start of the 2nd half though, we needed to take an attacker (Kachunga or Dapo) off and beef up the midfield a bit. Villa were overloading on Bradley time after time. Williams couldn’t help out too much or the centre would be wide open.

Lots of positives, great to have had a genuinely decent cup tie. It’s been a while

Superb tonight, matched the Premier League millionaires for an hour without ther rub of the green.

I thought the ref had a reasonable if not decent first half, but it was almost as though he'd had instructions not to allow us to tackle in the second.

We gave it a go, they were better than us in the end, but the scoreline flattered them a litle.

Kachunga should have shot and neither him nor Bakayoko are footballers.

Agree about the ref 2nd half. Can't help but think he'd have managed to find a foul in the build up to our goal of that had happened in the second.

Would love to know how much dosh we've made out of a 20,000+ gate and TV money. Certainly a nice little earner (less the policing costs and the other overheads).

Not a lot, I'd say.

20000 at £7.50 (average assuming similar numbers of concessions to adults) = £150,000

I think our cut is 45%, so £67,500. Huge police presence last night, TV money isn't great for Carabao etc etc

But, whatever we made is likely to be an unplanned bonus, so no complaints.

Would hope we made a few quid over the bars, mind, and with any luck there were one or two new fans who liked what they saw and will come back in future. Consider it an investment in that sense.

I didn't know we only got 45%. Was assuming we'd get the whole lot as the home side.

Nah, it's 45% per club and 10% to the league.
There's no prize money in the cup either until the semis.
Lose the semi and you get £25k, losing finalist gets £50k and the winner gets £100k.

Fair play mate - I agree, great response from him tonight.

All I wanted from today was a confidence boost after Saturday. And I Know a 1-4 defeat sounds anything but this, but I think there was enough there tonight to be positive about.

Lee, MJ and John were very good. For 60 mins we competed really well with a prem team. We stuck to our principles of passing, possession and pressing which, for 60 mins worked effectively.

Trafford would have made a difference, but I understand Evatts thinking with Dixon.

With Dempsey, Morley and Jones rested they will be fresh for Saturday. A win (or even a draw) V Plymouth will have us back on track

Works both ways I’m not his biggest fan however he stepped up and put Saturday behind him👏

trafford probably saves 2 maybe 3 of the villa goals but fine with his selection it’s a long season don’t forget FA cup starts early November if we had beaten villa the next round would be in the same week

it was a win win for us not embarrassed by a premier league club & we got a few quid

Plus the Official Car Park was rammed again at £8 per vehicle.

Don’t wanna to single anyone out as tonight was about the collective but Kachunga. Fuck me

ball bounces right in your path with a clear shot and perfect angle at goal on your stronger foot and you cut back?

never seen an attacking player so reluctant to have an effort at goal. And I don’t just mean tonight

Yes that summed up his performance/ability.  Feeble.  How many times did he go down after the slightest touch?  And what was that about near H-T when he tried to defend by lieing down to block a cross?

I felt IE didn't give us the best chance to make more of a game of it, and to show us in a better light on TV, these opportunities come round once every few years.  Starting with Dixon and Kachunga against a Prem team.

Everyone rightly praising Lee, but that was the best I've seen Williams play, I thought he looked comfortable in that company, and John looked more like his old self.  Slightly disappointed with Aimson, Santos and Dapo, their passing is better than they showed last night.  Overall, very enjoyable "bonus game" but a bit frustrated because we can be better.

Williams been our best player every game he’s played this season.

The ref ruined the game imo, he let it flow for the first 30 or 40 mins, but that penalty decision was awful and gave Villa the impetus, the player had no chance of reaching the ball so he just dived over Dixons outstretched body, the ref got suckered into the decision because he wanted to.

We clearly ran out of steam on the hour, but we’d matched them up to that point.

Enjoyed the first hour, great atmosphere.

Mate come on. You telling me he's not at fault for the third goal. Fuck off. Trafford would of caught that first one with one hand. Dixon is a useless cunt. This isn't the first example of this. First half of last season before we brought Trafford in he's was awful.

Where do I say he's not at fault for the third goal? Re read what's written & fuck off yerself

Having watched it back I honestly do not know if it is a penalty, Dixon 100% makes contact and even though Ings sticks a foot in Dixon catches him too. BUT Ings has knocked the balls miles past and won't be getting there .

Exactly.

You see the same every week, some refs refuse to fall for it and other refs choose to fall for it.

point 1 - evatts job isnt to sell us on the tv

and 2, fucking hell, where to start

aimson always passes poorly

santos and dapo have never played at that level before - its experience that may improve them - to expect them to do what they do week in week out is naive, imo

fwiw, i think santos, until he also tired - showed how well he can defend against very good attackers

That was a massive LC 2nd round crowd by our standards

Anbody find a bigger one?

Maybe city or chelsea around 70 but that may have been a later round?

I think other than everton in the semi, that might be the biggest home LC crowd ive been in

Watch somebody roll loads out :)

I can't think of a bigger one but I can't remember a 2nd round tie against a Prem team at this stadium, can anyone else?  The 2nd round was 2 legs upto 2000-01 so those ties you mention must have been at least 3rd round.

On a related note, I wonder when we last had aggregate crowds in one month anywhere near we've had in August.  Approx 83k in 5 matches averaging 16,600.  Surely its never happened since Prem days and I bet not many times in those days either.

Agree, think the speed and fitness of Villa caught us out yesterday, certainly second half. A few players were caught In possession or tried a pass that would likely have worked out against lg1 opposition,  but villa players were too quick or sharp to it, great learning.

Santos in the first half showed he can more than hold his own against prem opposition,  second half there were two occasions I can remember where he switched off and was slow to react, but I think they were all knackered towards the end.
