I can't think of a bigger one but I can't remember a 2nd round tie against a Prem team at this stadium, can anyone else?  The 2nd round was 2 legs upto 2000-01 so those ties you mention must have been at least 3rd round.

On a related note, I wonder when we last had aggregate crowds in one month anywhere near we've had in August.  Approx 83k in 5 matches averaging 16,600.  Surely its never happened since Prem days and I bet not many times in those days either.

faiir enough

open it up to any round and inc burnden

its a big LC crowd for us and the fact its so early makes it even more impressive

i remember at least one, prob 2 v forest in our dark days, 85?  where we got well dicked at burnden

sheff wed at reebok was a 'big game'

anyway, what im saying, 15k home fans for the LC is far from poor

Hardly worth the bother!

One reason so many don't bother unfortunately!  What's in it for championship clubs or the likes of Fulham, Bournemouth?

As fans we enjoy the match itself, even if its just Salford at home in front of 6k, for many clubs it will be just about finances and avoiding injuries probably.

The ref ruined the game imo, he let it flow for the first 30 or 40 mins, but that penalty decision was awful and gave Villa the impetus, the player had no chance of reaching the ball so he just dived over Dixons outstretched body, the ref got suckered into the decision because he wanted to.

We clearly ran out of steam on the hour, but we’d matched them up to that point.

Enjoyed the first hour, great atmosphere.

Plus how the fck did it take him 7 fouls to book Kamara ?

Williams been our best player every game he’s played this season.

That's a big call (I can't recall which games he's played/missed though).

So I'm not disagreeing but I think Dempsey, Morley, Bradley and Aimson have also had good shouts for MOM(s) this season.

Hotel one was full, so was Scott's.

Parked on that rubble bit near the police station for the first time ever.

Coppers outside Scotts told us to park on the Arena.
There's normally someone there collecting fivers, but nobody there last night.
I await a parking fine.

point 1 - evatts job isnt to sell us on the tv

and 2, fucking hell, where to start

aimson always passes poorly

santos and dapo have never played at that level before - its experience that may improve them - to expect them to do what they do week in week out is naive, imo

fwiw, i think santos, until he also tired - showed how well he can defend against very good attackers

I just thought with the way IE is (more than a coach), he'd be very invested in selling us on TV.  But if he's not that's fine too, just disappointed personally we didn't go a bit more all-in to make last night the best it could be assuming its our one "biggish TV game" of the season.  But no big deal, I respect his reasons.

I don't agree on Aimson, I rate his distribution as better than last night, he was rushing some long passes unnecessarily at times, but its a minor gripe, I appreciate he probably made allowances for better opposition.

Just some of Santos's passing out to the wings wasn't his usual self, overhit or lacking accuracy, not criticising him just thought he didn't show his best self on the ball but yes he defended well.

He booked Johnston for his first mistimed challenge but i'm not sure he ever booked Kamara for multiple offences, there looked to be a foul on Aimson for the "corner" goal, Ings played for the penalty having overrun the ball, very fussy over some throw ins but let some go that were miles off & I thought that most of the 50-50's went against us.

We didn't lose because of the referee but his inconsistency didn't help.

Did have this feeling yesterday Dapo was going to use the opportunity to show he belongs at that level. His overall performance was kind of OK and definitely during the game I felt he did a few things / made a few decisions that were more about him rather than choosing the better option for the team.

extra touch here, tried beating an extra man there, should’ve released sooner somewhere else.

when if he had just done the right thing at the right time that in itself would’ve shown him in a better light

I remember going to Forest twice in the dark days as you say, I think we lost 4-0 both times.  One of the home legs was October 1991 (2nd round ties used to end in October!), we lost 5-2 in front of 5,469 (20k on for 1st leg at Forest).  Sheff Wed in 93 felt like a big game with Chris Waddle, Warhurst, Sheridan playing for them.  1st leg 11,590 at Burnden, 1-1 draw.  A few hundred of us went to Hillsborough for the 2nd leg, 0-1.

I'd be amazed if yesterday's wasn't the biggest league cup crowd at home since 70s (Everton, Leeds, City etc).

Kamara was not booked according to BBC. Ref warned him and pointed out the multiple fouls, but no card.

Even worse then. It was like he had a personal get out of jail card.

Look, we tired &, eventually were well beaten by a better side over 90m but still put forward a good display ... even with a lot of changes. The team is pointing in the right direction. But you do want consistency from the officials.

We were laughing as usually the ref points to 2 or 3 incidents and books him, he pointed to half a dozen and let it go.

They had better players and so we were chasing game and tired as you say.

Though both Lee and Williams were magnificent. We really rely on Trafford not only to make great saves but also to mop up behind the centre backs, for a young lad he is a fabulous keeper. Over the last two games there are some slight concerns, especially when the wing backs are forward and the three centre halves are spread, then a clever player can find spaces for the forwards and pick little holes in our defence. I thought Bannan did this really well on Saturday.

They were 1996/97.  Round 3 Chelsea 16,867

Rd 4 Spurs 18,621 (so probably more home fans than last night);

Rd 5 Wimbledon 16,968

18,037 v Tottenham in the third round in 2004 is one to throw in too as I don’t remember Spurs necessarily bringing thousands?

Good shout, forgot that game although I was there.  3rd round, 3-4 AET.  Spurs always well supported, definitely filled top tier but can't recall bottom tier.

Had 2 Villa fans sat next to us in North Lower. Only realised they were Villa when they got up and stormed out as soon as we scored. 😂

I think some of the Dixon criticism is very harsh. The move that resulted in our goal started with an excellent distributive throw from him, and nobody is saving that freak equaliser. Apart from his awful positioning for their 3rd goal, I don't think he did much wrong. The lads in front of him could have done more to prevent the 4th, but we were dead and buried by then anyway.

Afterwards, my 10-year old declared it the best game he's ever seen. Think he was a bit carried away with the 'Premier League opposition' factor (probably down to his Match Attax addiction), but it was fantastic to see him still beaming after losing 4-1.

I thought Dixon's distribution was better than Trafford's.

Regarding the first goal.  Not sure it was his fault, but ultimately, being a short-arse is a massive handicap for a goalkeeper.  Trafford may have got fingertips to it, but we'll never know.  I don't blame him for the penalty, we see goalkeepers giving those sort of penalties away all the time.  That third goal though, fuck me.

Dixon's had plenty of chances and he's proved he's simply not good enough.

I said 2 mins before their 2nd that what kills us and in this particular instance I was talking about Aimson are balls down the side of him. Players on his shoulder and balls between him and Santos. He’s great defending what’s in front of him but his and probably all our back lads (to a lesser extent Jones) Achilles heel is that.

price you pay when you have the 3 stretched across the 18 yard box I suppose

Wednesday playing in our yellow away kit for that game. Can’t recall why; maybe kitman  forgot to pack it or the vehicle transporting it to Burnden broke down.
