globaldiver Posted September 24, 2023 Posted September 24, 2023 Looking like little progress from last year. Play offs again, I’m predicting. Quote

Good thing this season is no team is good enough to run away with it like 3 of them did last year. We can afford a little wobble. L1 this season is as weak as it has been probably since we went up with Sheffield Utd. It will be stronger again next year unless 3 basket cases come down and all the financially backed L2 sides fuck up which is extremely unlikely Quote
nantwichwhite Posted September 24, 2023 Posted September 24, 2023 There was a discussion on the radio yesterday about Pep changing tactics slightly and wanting more ball carriers in midfield. It seems that he is always trying to improve his style and tactics. I wonder where this leaves our style of play as it does seem to be a rigid formula week on week, season by season. Quote

Not sure we can judge untill the new singings are back and injury free. It was clear last season we lacked link up and creation in midfield. We bought in CMG and Mags to rectify this. Weve just got to hope and pray when they're back they get it going because unlike last season we don't have Bradley to fall back on. At the minute we have no outlet. Only Sheehan wants to drive forward and get Dion or Vic away. Quote
ianofcleveleys Posted September 24, 2023 Posted September 24, 2023 It's not ideal that CMG and Maghoma have got injured at same time early in season, think you're right about them being brought in to offer more of that carrying and driving ability. The way it's going it's going to be near Xmas before we can really judge their impact. Where Pep's evolved but we haven't really had been going longer and over the top more with Haaland. They can put 30 passes together if they want but can also rob opponents and quickly have opposing centre halves turning and chasing with a long ball down a channel or over / beyond them. If we're guilty of anything it's when we get it back wanting to get back into another spell of passing rather than shifting it forward quickly. Quote
Tonge moor green jacket Posted September 24, 2023 Posted September 24, 2023 One of Pep's "specialities" is a diagonal across the box to an overlapping wide man or full back. Did it with sterling and Mahrez, do it with Foden and Walker now. All in a comparatively compact area, which makes the pass tougher, and the timing crucial. Quote
tomski Posted September 24, 2023 Posted September 24, 2023 I’m waiting for the note from wanderers saying let’s be in and around the play off and go for it in Jan. Rinse and repeat year after year. Quote

Said Saturday rather than slow build up play all the time just dink a ball over the top for Dion to run onto. It would work Quote

Not that I’m advocating becoming a long ball team, but for all our nice play we shouldn’t forget that these are L1 defenders and they hate facing their own goal. Around the 88th minute on Saturday, Baxter just launched a ball over the heads of their defence (or it could have been a Thomason clearance) and their defence were trying to deal with a bouncing ball, facing their own goal, with JDB putting pressure on. They panicked and it ended up going out for a throw near their corner. Again, I don’t think we rip up the game plan just because of a few iffy results, but I do think that we should remember that in this league, sometimes it’s the simple stuff that is most effective and adding it in as an option for how we get out wouldn’t be a bad thing. Dr. Feelgood Posted September 25, 2023 Posted September 25, 2023 He's in the Evening News (I know, but I still use inches, miles, ounces, lbs & farenheit) today saying how he needs to get a grip of on-pitch behaviour to prevent wasteful bookings & suspensions ... including his own pitch side temper tantrums. Well, apart from 'No shit Sherlock' and 'what's taken you so long ?' ... good. Quote
deeane Koontz Posted September 25, 2023 Posted September 25, 2023 I should think so too. There was 3 or 4 reckless from our lot at the weekend. Shouldn't be giving refs in this league an excuse coz they're whoppers. Quote

jmjhb Posted September 30, 2023 Posted September 30, 2023 Be interested to see who we get in as a replacement. I must admit I thought it was a bit of a jobs for the boys appointment at first but it does appear to have been a big success. Quote
