maybe in a few weeks when the conferences are over, the govt might set about sorting this shit out

This cannot go on. Shitting on your customers, costing hundreds of thousands of people a fortune and causing them serious disruption every few weeks is taking the piss.

They've made their point, now they need to get back to offering the fucking substandard service they've inflicted on people for donkeys years.

It's not the Government who are on strike.

It is, however, the Government currently running the show and in reality are in a far greater position to take control than would ordinarily be the case with franchising.

Personally I found it astounding when I first found out how reliant the rail industry has been on drivers working overtime and rest days. Reliance probably doesn’t even begin to cover it. I could understand if it was a shortage of drivers because of being unable to train drivers during Covid, but it would seem that the whole thing has been built on sand for years.

... & as they strike, or go falsely sick in planned outages, eventually they will return to work. The new drivers will come through and people who have become very used to overtime will find it's no longer required and their incomes will fall some way below their new earnings.

And, I repeat, it's not the Government who are on strike and breaking their employment contract.

That isn’t entirely accurate as Saturday services have invariably relied on over staff working overtime. The companies then banned overtime and then wondered why they had no staff at weekends. Given the whole dispute has been going on for 3-4 years, the only surprise is that it took so long to resort to strike action.

The fact that the DfT have effectively been running the train companies for the last two and a half years should have been something they used to their advantage but they’re content to let it all rumble on with little will to resolve it.

Whole thing is an absolute shitshow and the only people losing out are the paying customers.

Iirc, part of the issue is that the contracts are old fashioned and don't cover weekend working- might explain the overtime.

If they want better money, then they have to move into the 21st century.

Some of the stories/rumours if true are ridiculous with regards to working rules.

It's strange how some companies have had their franchise removed, yet others seem to manage OK.

I'm sure the press exaggerate in some things but it's a fact that they have 'Spanish Practices' that would take your breath away. Over manning, huge time wasting, utter refusal to be flexible are absolutele facts. Union reps are unnecessarily high in number and get breaks & time off that would take your breath away. They also shamelessly break agreements.

They have called over 100 action ballots every year but one since 2015. Has there been a Bank Holiday without a rail %/or tube strike (the Queen’s funeral being a notable exception).

Oh, & they demand 'no redundancy' agreements. Well, it's a fact that if any business ever offers you that they're lying. It simply cannot be agreed.

Add to this that there are literally hundreds of rail workers who've expressed interest in a redundancy package but the RMT, ASLEF, TASS have demanded any exits have new recuits to replace them ... which doesn't meet the definition of 'redundancy'.
