Fascinating career - a non-entity in his own country, a superstar abroad

My co director is South African, she adores him and went to the massive concert in 95. But also had no idea no one had heard of him. Interesting how locked off culturally a country can be due to politics.

I got into him through I Am Kloot as they loved his album which is great.

surprised he lasted this long

went watching him about 10 years or so ago after seeing the documentary

gig was in hammersmith so full of South Africans

was a strange one, he could barely walk, stand up, was incoherent, tried to interact with audience between songs, was all a bit awkward

so then the audience was shouting encouragement like:

non South Africans: "we love you rodridguez"

followed by

south afircans: "we love you more rodridguez, we loved you first"

kept getting their flags out

Robbie Robertson gone.

Spent a long time thinking he was a bit of a twat but The Band were a group of incredibly talented musicians and I think I did him wrong, not that he was arsed obviously.

Didnt he drive a reliant and present a show on bbc in the 70s?

Maybe aired before Porridge?

Michael Parkinson.

Ahh, that's sad. :(  A genuine broadcasting legend.

Seems to have been an old man forever, surprised he was only 88.

Sure, a professional Yorkshireman, but clearly from over here.

Just said on the radio he was from Cudworth......which I've never heard of, but it does sound like somewhere in Yorkshire

How is that relevant?

Bloke synonymous with Yorkshire and Barnsley dies and you're trying to claim him as Lancastrian

Odd

Northumbrian, technically.
