That fight with Sonny Liston in 1962 in Chicago - my Dad and Grandad won a competition in the Daily Telegraph to see it.

Pretty big stuff for a 19 year old to fly to Chicago in 1962. He had a choice of ??1000 (big money in those days) or to see the fight.

 

Kind of regretted it when Liston won in the quickest Heavyweight title fight ever.

 

Think the record was later beaten by Tyson when he pummelled Michael Spinks.

I know the feeling, watch Lennox Lewis destoy Michael Grant in 2 rounds

at Madison Sq Garden in 2000. The trip all up cost me about ??1000 also, worth ever penny.

 

A grand in 1962 however would have bought a damn sight more than it does today.
