It is truly astonishing, ludicrous money

Daft thing is he'd have signed for half that, maybe even 20% of it !!!

The thing is that in America they have a salary cap. What Beckham is being paid will not leave much for the wages of the rest of the players. I bet that does a lot for team spirit.

I believe next season will be the first where capping has been abolished, but I do stand to be corrected. I'm sure Fox Sports Channel had no influence on that decision at all if true. That's the Fox channel which is nothing to do with Murdoch and so nothing to do with Sky either.

NB - Cynic!

Close NB but not quite there. Salary capping remains but each club are allowed to sign one player for as much as they like, can't remember what it is called but it is for a specific reason. An American bloke was talking about it on the radio today.

The way it works is that each team has a $2.1 million salary cap, but are allowed to sign 1 "marquee" player. In Beckham's case, $400,000 of his salary will count towards the cap, which is paid by the league (MLS). the rest consisting of direct payments from the team owner, endorsements, image rights, etc. So, Biff, his salary will not have a major impact on what the other players earn.
