Present Players - David Thompson

Just occurred to me that I've not updated the 'Present Players List' to include former 'pieman' Thommo!

David Thompson

Born: Birkenhead, England, 12th September 1977

International Honours: England U21

Position: Midfielder

Squad Number: 15

Former Clubs: Liverpool, Swindon Town (loan), Coventry City, Blackburn Rovers, Wigan Athletic, Portsmouth

Bolton added to their midfield options on the final day of the January transfer window when they recruited the former England U21 midfielder David Thompson from Portsmouth for a nominal fee which has not been disclosed.

Thompson spent an unhappy six month spell on the South Coast with Pompey and had no hesistation in moving to the North West where he had previously played for Liverpool, Blackburn Rovers and Wigan Athletic.

He began his career with Liverpool as a youth trainee in November 1994 and broke into their first team squad some two years later after successfully helping the them lift aloft the FA Youth Cup. His first two games for the Anfield club came as a substitute in the home games against Arsenal and Sunderland but he was unable to break into a midfield consisting of Steve McManaman, Patrik Berger, Jamie Reknapp, John Barnes and Michael Thomas and so was loaned out to First Division Swindon Town to gain experience of a first team environment.

Whilst with the Robins he played ten games and helped them find some sort of form as they struggled at the wrong end of what is now known as the Championship. This didn't go unnoticed by the management at Liverpool and towards the tail end of the 1997-1998 season and the start of the 1998-1999 campaign he was to be given more opportunities to impress as well as a number of appearances for the England U21 team.

By 1999-2000 he was a regular name on the Liverpool team sheet and managed to score in the Premier League games against Watford, Sheffield Wednesday and Chelsea. The latter proving particularly important as the Blues where then challenging Liverpool for one of the much coveted European places.

It came as a shock when Reds manager Gerard Houllier sold Thompson to Coventry for ?3 million in the summer of 2000 and in many respects although it gave Thompson a bit more playing time it did lead to relegation from the top flight at the end of his first season with the Sky Blues.

In the 2001-2002 season Thompson was voted as the Coventry player of the year after scoring a number of goals from midfield and this understandably attracted much interest from clubs in the top division who where impressed at the fact that he outshone many of the other players in the first division.

Blackburn Rovers aquired his signature just after the 2002-2003 season had gotten underway and he immediately made the right wing position his own within weeks of arriving at Ewood Park. He played in a Rovers midfield that consisted of Garry Flitcroft, Tugay, Damien Duff and former Wanderers target David Dunn but unfortunately a knee injury disrupted his first season with Blackburn and he ultimately missed out on full England honours despite being called up to the full squad.

Seasons 2003-2004 and 2004-2005 saw him again struggle with injuries and by January 2006 the current Blackburn manager Mark Hughes thought it best to allow the Birkenhead born player a chance to re-start his career elsewhere and newly promoted Wigan Athletic offered him a lifeline.

In his few months at the JJB Stadium he offered a new dimension to their midfield and even has the distinction of becoming the last opposing player to score at Arsenal's old Highbury Stadium, a 30-yard thunderbolt at that to confirm that his injuries where fully a thing of the past.

However Latics manager Paul Jewell decided not to offer him a deal at the end of the season and he made his way out of Wigan along with his former Liverpool team mate Stephane Henchoz, who has since made the return to Blackburn.

Harry Redknapp recruited "Thommo" to his Portsmouth team in the summer of 2006 but the midfielder found starts limited and became increasingly unhappy with the amount of games he was being involved in. Not only that his young family where still based in the North meaning that his time on the South Coast didn't go as expected paving the way for a move to Bolton where he hopes to help the club back into Europe.

Once again many thanks to the Manny Road site for all the source details -
