Tight security for Red Star v Bolton UEFA Cup tie

Wed Dec 5, 2007 3:49pm GMT Email | Print | Share| Single Page | Recommend (0) [-] Text [+] BELGRADE (Reuters) - Red Star Belgrade's UEFA Cup Group F match with Bolton Wanderers on Thursday will be played under tight security measures, Red Star spokesman Milan Boskovic told reporters on Wednesday.

"More than 700 security stewards will be in place and extra units of regular and riot police will also be deployed to monitor the fans," Boskovic said.

"We want to make sure there are no incidents that could overshadow the match or derail our efforts to reach the knockout stage of the competition."

A policeman was seriously injured at Red Star's ground on Sunday, during their Serbian first-division match with Hajduk Kula, when rioting fans battered him with burning flares.

"Anyone who violates the safe conduct code will be expelled from the stadium or stopped from getting in if it happens before the kickoff," Boskovic said.

Red Star are bottom of the group with two defeats from their opening two matches and need a win to keep alive any hope of advancing to the last 32.

Bolton have three draws from as many matches and complete their group-stage campaign against Red Star.
