PORTUGUESE journalists attending Wanderers' media conference at the Reebok were perplexed by Gary Megson's apparent indifference towards the UEFA Cup.

 

Those who follow the fortunes of Sporting Lisbon couldn't understand why the Bolton manager considered it more important to beat Wigan Athletic on Sunday week.

 

"You sound as though it would be a relief if you lost," one visitor suggested, drawing his own conclusions ahead of tonight's first leg of the last 16 tie.

"We want to win it," said Megson.

 

"I hope I don't give the impression that we are trying to get out of this competition, because that would be quite easy to do. I could play myself!
