On the face of things, Coventry stood little chance of making the FA Cup Final, but could win their last 4 league games and sneak into the play-offs.

Should they have accepted a Wembley defeat before a ball was kicked and played a weakened team?

Of course not, keep your eyes on the prize and whilst it's still there, you have to go for it.
Play our best team and if Derby at 2-up at HT, we make 5 subs.

Absolutely, while there's still a chance, we've got to go for it.

When any hope has gone, then protect 5 of our better players.......it could suit P/boro to have their reserve players steaming into us !!

  2. Bodvarsson is the only forward who'll be leaving in the summer unless we get a mad offer for someone.

Charles, Vic, Collins & CMG will get their chance whichever division we're in, possibly with another Dan-type gamble.

If we stay down, Jerome could probably continue as a fairly cheap , bit part player.

  3. I'd be concerned about Charles if he wasn't getting any chances, but even in his lean goalscoring spell, with his striker's instinct & movement, he's still getting chances & it's only a matter of time before they start going in again.

Was it Hereford we played in a cup, drew at Burnden, drew at their place and there was a replay at Cardiff ?

Or have I dreamt it ?

We drew with Cardiff twice & played the 3rd game at West Brom.  Loads went from Bolton, hardly any from Cardiff, it snowed & we won.

Also had 2nd replays with Fulham at St Andrews & memorably, Newcastle at Leeds.

  5. The FA Cup has increasingly been devalued over recent years largely to suit premier league clubs, but this is sickening......what right do Prem League twats have to have any say in the 1st & 2nd rounds that don't even involve them ?

  6. Their goal from the corner......whether it was by design or not, there was a major kerfuffle in the box before the corner was taken that was a big distraction & would have taken our defenders' eyes off the bloke outside the box,.....plus the loss of Santos & Jones & reshuffle of all 3 defenders was sure to unbalance the defence to some extent.......& he did hit it well, i bet he can't do that often,

    but Evatt's fault obvs

  7. Out, never fancied the 12-30 kick off & now saving my money for the play offs. (Does anyone know if the date & kick off time of the play off final has been confirmed ? )

  8. Quite surprised to see how much trouble Vale are in,  they look like goners after last night's results.

Shame really, if we don't go up , I like a trip to PV where there's a lively atmosphere & we usually do well there.....plus, a trip to Burslem always makes me feel better about Bolton !!

There’s no harm in him ffs.

Met him in the Newcome Arms in Portsmouth years ago, the only offensive thing about him is his odour.

Aye, he's a bit "outgoing" for me & not popular with all Pompey fans but he's looked after Bolton fans down there, was with some Bolton this season, & made the effort to come up for Ferny's funeral. He's alright.

& today.....not a good start, i see the 5-13 train back to town is cancelled !!

  10. If i'm reading that right, IF we go up, there's only about a 50/50 chance of us playing at 3pm Saturday. In the championship, I doubt we'd be a popular pick for tv games & our games chosen would probably be mostly home games against more "fashionable" clubs.

If we're still in div 1, as "big fish", we could get picked just as often which could be a pain for rearranging away games.....just hope there would be plenty of warning of fixture date/time changes.

Also never seen a player commit as many fouls as Yengi without getting booked. 11 freekicks against him IIRC. He might not get away with as much away from home, but these refs are so shit

Yep, in the game at Portsmouth, we were the better team but Pompey flew into us with Santos & Sheehan being especially targetted & not given a second to play.......but Yengi should have been booked for his persistant fouling which would have made a difference.

  12. Some lovely football & we could have scored more, especially Dempsey at the death.

Top performances from Santos & Sheehan, Collins has a touch of quality, Bod was poor 1st half but very good 2nd  & Thomason & Magoma both got better as the game went on.

Apart from the keeper/juggler, Reading were very ordinary but had a 10/15 minute spell when they were a real threat & Coleman did well for us, but our subs seemed to finish them off.

Very enjoyable & hopefully some of the part timers will return.

If they are winning they will be drowning us out whether its 2k or 5k, but I have sympathy for folk not wanting to see a full 5k bouncing in celebration against us, I can see both arguments.

Re the "home moaners", if people don't sing it doesn't make them a moaner.  I'm guessing that over half the usual home crowd never join in with any song.  Look around you, families and older folk and deadpan expressions from fans just wanting to watch the match.  They wouldn't be singing if we won promotion, it isn't in some people's nature.  It doesn't make them moaners, plenty of the singers are the same folk booing or whingeing when we're playing badly.

I'm not calling people who are quiet "moaners ", i'm referring to those who can't wait to criticise or squeal " geddit forward " the moment things are going against us.

They're only a minority but they can kill the atmosphere & support for the team.

Wouldn’t say Forest are anywhere near as big as West Ham, personally. Their support is fairly localised whereas West Ham seem to have a free run on a huge portion of the country.

West Ham's support has changed markedly, a few years back, they were largely from rough, east end areas of London but now they seem to mostly be Essex gobshites..........& that wanky crossed arms thing they do now, the old school lot didn't do that.

  15. We could sell the remaining south lower tier to Bolton fans & if they sell, take the upper tier as well, but if we're falling away, I'm not convinced that our part timers will pay 30 pound a ticket.

If we can't sell out the lower tier, we should give the upper tier to Portsmouth.....it would be tinpottery to leave 2000ish seats empty when they could sell them, we're not Blackpool !!

They don't make much noise from the upper tier & at worst , we still outnumber them by more than 3 to 1.......if we can't drown them out, it's down to our home moaners, not because we sold them a few more tickets.

  16. Just back & still gutted. We were much the better team, played some lovely football but if you don't score you can get sucker punched like today.

Can't complain, we've done it to others. It's looking like the play offs for us now but hopefully we'll have Dion & Baxter  back after the break.

Football specials is a proper blast from the past !!!

    Supporter Information:

There will be a Football Special train for Bolton Wanderers supporters ONLY direct from Stoke to Derby - departing Stoke station at 10:23am (arrives into Derby just after 11am).

Post match:  Bolton Wanderers supporters ONLY direct from Derby to Stoke - Departs Derby station platform 3 at 5:25pm (arrives in Stoke just after 6pm).

Very odd timings, I don't want to be in Derby at 11, & though i wouldn't mind coming back on it, i don't leave early & i don't run (& i like to call in the chippy facing the station !! ), so 5-25 would be cutting it fine.   More likely to get the service train back  at about 5-45.

  18. Wonderful, just wonderful. I wasn't expecting that & at h/t I still thought Oxford would improve ( they didn't ) or we would go off the boil. (we didn't, if anything, we got even better )

Everyone played well & contributed making it hard to pick a MOTM, if forced i'd go for Cogley, but it was a real team job.

  19. Coleman & Bod are fine as 3rd division reserves/stand ins but both starting weakens us at both ends, so I can't see us winning the next 2.......our hope has to be that others drop points & that we've get Baxter & Dion back after the break.

Yeh, like you can’t remember which game, or I’ll say games, as I’m sure it’s plural! He was the one who won that penalty at Wycombe as well wasn’t he?

Same as at Barnsley, Jerome used his experience to get the penalty at Wycombe, that time by getting ahead of the defender & then slowing down enough to get his heel clipped. They were both penalties but he made sure the referees saw them !!

As a late replacement player, he's nearly always done a good job for us.

  21. Just back & still buzzing from that finish.

We started off the better team without threatening much until we gave away a messy goal  after which we played too much aimless long ball stuff & went 2 down......but, we showed real character fighting back with a mixture of some long ball but also some lovely football.

Getting Sheehan & Thomason into the game was huge & most of the subs worked well, Iredale & Randell were good on the left, Jones was effective as RWB, Jerome did well & Maghoma was very lively.

Getting the equaliser in time added on for Barnsley's usual cheating was a pleasing kind of justice , as was Santos letting Cosgrove know that we've not forgotten him !!

"Two nil & you fucked it up ....EIEIEIO "

  22. Poor 1st half but better 2nd when Sheehan, Maghoma & Dempsey got into the game.

Their 2nd goal was horrible.....asleep to the short corner, no tackles when it's played accross & Coleman should have done better. (He'd no chance with the others )

On the plus side, we scored 3 good goals, certainly improved & nearly won it at the end but we're desperate for Santos & Baxter to return.

    Could have been worse !!!

My over riding memory of Sheffield  is sitting in the bar at the Crucible after watching the snooker. The window overlooked the main road. Behind that was a 'nightclub' called The Roxy and behind that up the hill was a massive grey building like something out of Russia or China. The biggest eyesore I've ever seen. And the whole vista was grey, everything.

It's all changed now I know, but thirty odd years ago that was it.

That sounds like the Park Hill estate at the back of the train station & up the hill. ....concrete brutalism apparently !! After games in Sheffield or changing there, we used to go up the hill to the 3 or 4 pubs in the estate. !st time it was a bit daunting, the pubs were roughish but we didn't act like dicks & never got bothered.

It all went downhill & the pubs shut down.......there was talk of refurbishing them but i've not been back.https://www.theguardian.com/cities/2015/aug/14/park-hill-brutalist-sheffield-estate-controversial-renovation
