Right then I need some help / advice, ive just prchased my 1st pc back in November and all of the free 90 day trials on the security software are due to run out next week. The pc is a Dell E521 with windows xp and I am using BT broadband option 3 for my internet access, the free security that came with the pc is, Norton ghost and Mcafee security center and it has been good. I was seriously looking at purchasing the McAfee package but at ??50 for 12 months and ??120 for 36 months I thought I would try here first. Because I am not too sure as to what security I really need I would appreciate any advice and if you could post the links then that would be brill, also when I have down loaded the new security software is it advisable to delete the old programmes or just let them run together.

You need a anti-virus, firewall and anti-spyware.

 

I wouldn't pay for a anti-virus, there are a couple of good free ones, 'AVG' or 'Avast' spring to mind.

For the firewall i use Sygate Pro but thats not free, there is a free one called "Zone Alarm" and Windows XP SP2 comes with an adequate one built in that

you probably have anyway (see start -- control panel -- security centre), so your choice.

For anti-spyware Microsoft have there own "Windows Defender" and there are other free ones on the web such as "spybot search and destroy".

That's if you don't want to pay for it. Don't run them together, you will need to uninstall the old ones first.

Some AV companies are having a row with Microsoft about how vista security works but avast seem to have sorted it.
