Eddie Hopkinson came out of National Service to resume playing for Bolton's 4th team (in the Manchester League). Circumstances dictated that he started the next season in the first team (he was still 4th choice), and within 18 months he played his first senior international.

 

At the start of the transfer window Lainton was 4th choice (but not 4th team, obviously, in this era of subs).

Hopkinson got his chance because Lancashire CCC wanted to keep first choice Ken Grieves until the end of the crcket season. Second choice Joe Dean was injured. Who was third choice keeper then?
