SAM ALLARDYCE praised the Bolton Wanderers supporters after watching his side get their campaign off to a splendid start - but was disappointed with the size of the crowd.
22,899 supporters attended the opening game at the Reebok Stadium and witnessed a superb display from Wanderers. Early goals from Kevin Davies and, perhaps, a goal of the season contender from Ivan Campo saw the Reebok erupt into a cauldron of noise, particularly in the second-half, which delighted Allardyce.
But there were plenty of empty seats in the stadium.
"I thought the crowd were absolutely fantastic especially after Tottenham put a little bit of pressure on us in the second-half," said Allardyce.
"They got very patient with us when we weren't doing too many attacks and they started singing to lift the players.
"The problem is: there weren't enough of them. There were only 20,000 Bolton fans here today and 2,700 Spurs fans. We had 27,000 fans here last season. Where have they all gone?
"We've been as good as we've ever been. We only lost three games at home last season, but the fans that were here today were magnificent."
Allardyce was delighted with the manner in which his side kicked off their season.
He added: "Tottenham had very little to offer after Ivan Campo had got our second. It was a very precious three points and a great clean sheet to open the campaign with."
that is what i want to see
a word about the stayways, BUT praise for the ones that do their bit
its been some time coming, but hopefully a sign of things to come
