Bolton are reported to have missed out on Antoine Sibierski and Ivan Helguera as well as six other signings on deadline day.
Wanderers boss Sam Allardyce was working right up until the deadline on Thursday trying to sign new players but for one reason or another failed with his attempts to strengthen his ranks.
Manchester City forward Sibierski was a target but the player opted to sign for Newcastle instead, while Real defender Helguera was also a target only for the Spanish club to turn down the move.
Bolton also pulled out of a move for Zenit St Petersburg left-back Pavel Mares as Allardyce suffered a frustrating deadline day. Allardyce is delighted with the ??8million capture of Nicolas Anelka however and now believes he has a squad strong enough to get him through until the window re-opens in January.
