THE home of Bolton Wanderers will carry the Reebok name for another nine years.

 

The Whites have signed a new multi-million sponsorship agreement with the international sportswear giant that strengthens a long-standing link with one of the most famous brands in world sport.

 

The new deal, which runs until 2016, represents the biggest sponsorship tie-up in the club's history.

Wanderers have also agreed principally to extend its technical kit sponsorship with Reebok until 2016, when the current agreement expires in 2009.

 

Reebok's association with Wanderers stretches back more than 18 years, when the sportswear giant first sponsored the team's shirts, and is the longest standing main club sponsorship agreement in British football.

 

The company, which has its roots in Bolton dating back to 1895 when Bolton athlete Joe Foster opened a shop in St Helens Road, now has its UK headquarters in the stadium's North Stand, where state-of-the-art office facilities overlook the pitch.

 

Already well connected in the sponsorship field, Wanderers and Reebok were pioneers of stadium naming rights, striking their first ground-breaking agreement - described at the time as the most lucrative stadium sponsorship in football - when the new ground opened in 1997.

 

Wanderers' chief executive Allan Duckworth, said: "We have enjoyed an outstanding and mutually beneficial partnership with Reebok for a great many years.

 

"We pride ourselves on establishing long term strategic partnerships and are delighted to be able to extend our stadium naming rights partnership for a further nine-year term, thereby reaffirming our association with one of the world's leading sportswear companies."

 

Kath Smith, managing director of Reebok UK, Ireland and Benelux added: "Reebok was founded in Bolton in 1895 and our relationship with Bolton Wanderers spans 20 years.

 

"We are delighted to maintain our strong association, not just for historical reasons, but also for the exceptional performances of the club in the recent past both on and off the field."

 

The new deal erases doubts that Reebok's ?2.1 billion takeover by the German firm Adidas in 2005 would impact on Wanderers' commercial revenue.

Am I right in thinking this deal applies to kit manufacture as opposed to actual shirt sponsorship?

If so, it's not as much money as people will expect.

I think the new deal is for stadium name rights, also an agreement to extent the kit manufacturers deal beyond 2009 when it's due to expire has been agreed.

I'd read that as shirt sponsorship plus training kit plus them big overpriced jackets for the bench warmers

After careful deliberation, I still think it's kit manufacture, NOT shirt sponsorship.

i was hoping the BEN would get the sponsership deal back, now that its dropped the evening bit and is just the Bolton News Paper we could have been the first team with a BNP logo on our shirts
