noticed on sat west ham had numbers were the sponsors should have been because xl went bust.

so are we the taxpayers sponsoring newcastle , after the goverment bailed out northern rock.

I'd have thought sponsorship was usually paid up front. Maybe West Ham's was in instalments.

If it's true that the tax payer's paying for Newcastle's, I reckon this needs investigation.

It was confirmed on 20 May 2008 that Northern Rock would continue to sponsor both Newcastle United and the Newcastle Falcons, the former due to the long term agreement between them and the club. Chief Executive Ron Sandler was quoted as saying:

 

"We have already ended a number of sponsorships that I inherited... but we have chosen to continue the sponsorship of Newcastle United and Newcastle Falcons, partly because of commitments we have entered into there - sometimes sponsorships continue until they come to a contractual end - and partly because I believe it is in the commercial interest of the bank that we should continue with both of these."

When the Deutsche Asset Management were bought by Aberdeen the other year the Jocks didn`t want to be associated with Villa. As Villa had already been paid up front they decided to retain the logo on the front as people had already bought replica kits and thought it would not be fair to remove it.

 

Therefore they are the only club I know of that had a sponsor that did not even exist.

Not strictly true, Northern Rock are meant to pay the money back that has been pumped in.

 

So it's hypotheticals at the minute.

 

They reckon in the end it will cost the taxpayer ?1bn though so you could say it's being paid for by us. Bit of a stretch though.
