Absolute dogshite, and it was never played at any of the many Northern venues i attended back in the day - so i wonder which numpty decided it was a "Soul" song? It had White writers and a white singer, and it's just a piss poor pop song imo.

If i remember rightly"Under my thumb" was one of those bubblegum shitey pop songs that some marketing mug at Pye Disco Demand record label, thought would earn 'em a few quid due to Northern Souls commercial popularity at the time (about 1975 iirc)

If there were 13,000 (allegedly) N.Soul songs ever made, "Under my thumb" would be my 13,001st favourite.

 

Ps If any DJ spun that at a Northern do here in the motherland he'd get fookin lynched

Being much older; less fit and far less attractive to women than you, I came through a time when Soul and 60's R'n'B was all part of the Mod scene and then went down the 'Rare Soul' path to Northern. I didn't get too carried away with the elitism which existed within the NS scene. Just like I didn't really distinguish between Mods, skins, suedes, smoothies, scooterboys; rude boys etc., I have no problem with musical tastes I would describe as 'Scootering Sounds' which includes the music of all of these youth cultures.

 

Happy to concede then that it ain't a NS number - it's 60's R'n'B. I happen to like it.
