The 70's

The 70's,end of Woodstock and the hippy days

hello colour tv and snooker's green baize

Israeli hostage killed at the munich game

chilling footage from the live tv frames

The star of the decade was dismal and bleak

strikes and power shortages hitting their peak

Clubbers never bothered about the shortage of coal

when struttin their stuff to Northern Soul

Dance all at Wigan Casino

Go home shattered, looking like an albino

A day at the match,a night at the wheel

God how good that would make you feel

Moercambe and Wise,Annie Walker,Jack and Vera

Porridge,Rising Damp,Fawlty Towers,what an era

Football on a sunday, the church said the end was nigh

but a JB hat-trick had 40,000 on a high

Next round the saints,a replay on a wednesday afternoon

half day shopping,everything closed down

Over 20,00 for a 3pm kick off in midweek

we're lucky to get that now at our peak

The 70's saw major outbreaks of football violence

it was the culture, still made no sense

United's red army travelled all over in numbers

waking up Norwich citizens from their slumbers

One dirty red fell through the Carrow Road roof

I hope he suffered more than a broken tooth

A few teams came to take on the Lever Enders

But we had plenty of good lads to defend us

Away to Blackpool,a very sad day

The life of Tangerine fan taken away

Ian Greaves arrived and the place picked up

Strong in the league, good runs in the Cup

Fulham with the stars,Best Moore and Marsh

Giving the handbag to though was a bit harsh

40,000+ v Sunderland,the roar deafened my lobe

especially with Big Sam's flying wardrobe

Even more for epic games with the toon army

Supermac's screamer sending 15,000 magpies barmy

50,000 for the replay at St James's Park

we came away happy 0-0 in the dark

40,000+ again for the game at Elland Road

miles of traffic on the 62,coaches emptying their load

We did our best but showed signs of fatigue

never mind said Greavo 'we'll go for the league'

Bay City Rollers came, doc martens and flares

fashion in those days,nobody cares

77 was for the Whites a golden year

And silver for the world's favourite peer

Street parties,jubilee cheer and parade

Wimbledon won by our own Virginia Wade

In the men's Ashe,Connor and Borg

then McEnroe made it lively in the morgue

'umpire, get a pair of new bins'

the snobs nearly choking on strawberries and pimms

Back to the cup,50,000 against the toffee tarts

that bastard Latchford breaking our hearts

Likewise that Wolves bastard who looked like Fu man Chu

Hibbitt kept us in Division 2

Greavo played his ace card though for Bolton

Signing the legend Frank Worthington

Just what we needed, such a classy boost

that season fuck Spurs,we ruled the roost

The cup runs were short and came to an end

Ian said 'we're going up,on that you depend'

20,000 Whites at Blackburn,Frankie Vali said 'oh what a night'

the doom was lifted and out came the light

1-0 to us,courtesy of the legend Franky

Back in the 1st,we were no longer Wanky

The Tartan army were en route to Argentina

to meet ossie ardiles and ricky villa

But they messed up bigtime against Incas from peru

Win the cup Ally ? You won't make round 2

They did the same against the Ayatollah's Iran

run from the mosque by the beared Imam

A ray of joy against the gifted Netherlands

but it wasn't enough for the Campbell clans

As usual, like Joe Bugner, out at the end of the round

Ally's Army 1st flight home,Glasgow bound

Along came Travolta and Olivia Newton John

oh yes,i'd give her one

Dancing at Scamps to Grease and Saturday Night Fever

Back in the 1st,they've put seats in the Lever

Things got worse, the Tories came to power

Thatcher's lot,what a bleedin shower

She soon took the smile off our face

Britain again was a sorry place

The decade and over and assigned to the past

The 70's was a decent blast

Aye they ran us everywhere in their relegation year. Trouble was your average bolton lad was 17-19 whereas they were 21-23. plus they outnumbered us 3-1 which in the day of the mass "ooh - altogether" spartan thrust always had the upper hand.

Still it steeled the later 80's generation into standing firm.
