January 18, 201511 yr Share with the class Just watching the Sound of Song: 1 The Recording Revolution (iplayer) a fascinating programme tracing the evolution of sound recordings and how they influenced songs - and out of the blue Dexys Midnight Runners get a mention in relation to the 1775 Irish/American folk tune "Believe me if all those endearing charms" which was used by Thomas Edison in 1922 at his celebrated "Test of Tone Recreation" shows all across America to promote his first shellac 78 gramophone player........"the celebrated soprano Maggie Tate began singing a famous melody, which you might recognise as the fiddle intro to Come on Eileen by Dexys Midnight Runners, then suddenly the lights went down, just as quickly the lights came back up again as the song continued to ring out, but now on stage was this, the new Edison Disc Phonograph, but the sublime Miss Tate was mute, no words came from those melodious lips, so where was this music coming from ......" A wonderful melody with an amazing history and a great intro.
