Will be attending the local parades in Coatbridge, on to the main Scotland one, takes about 2 hours for all the bands to file past, and back to Coatbridge again as they return to the Hall

However, Loyalists aren't attacking MY country. Loyalists didn't plant a bomb outside Warrington McD's, set to go off on a Saturday morning.

as i said the marching seasn is nothing to do with me.

 

dont know much about the situation in northern ireland to be honest

 

but do know as a kid that nearly every week there something on the telly about the ira bombing something, wether that was manchester centre, warrington, horses in london the bloke off record breakers, mountbatten....whatever.....so given the choice would have to be loyalists.

I know the situation in Northern Ireland inside out. I've been up there plenty times, I've walked round Republican areas like Falls and Ardoyne and chatted to Republicans, I've walked round Loyalist areas like the Shankill and Newtownards and chatted to Loyalists and the one thing that strikes me time after time is how many folk on both sides are ordinary, decent, well to do folk who want nothing more than to live in peace; to send their little uns to school, to go to work, to go for a pint without the fear of not coming back. That takes COMPROMISE.

 

I've got sympathy with the Unionist/Loyalist cause as I am British, I'm not one of these who moans that they can't put English on their passport forms. As a British person I consider Northern Ireland a part of the UK and I think it should be defended as Wales or Scotland would be. Protestantism I couldn't give a fcuk about, all religion should be purged from public life.

 

HOWEVER, the British treated Catholics up there like shit for a great many years and that's what sent hundreds of people into the IRA, very little to do with what flag flew over Belfast City Hall. Nowadays Catholics have essentially the same rights as Prods have, they can get jobs, houses, places at University, public sector jobs etc. So in that scenario what young Catholic with a bright future is going to join the IRA on the national question alone??? There would have been no war if we'd sussed that in the 60s.

 

I'd love to go to Belfast for the 12th as there is not enough British patriotism in this country and that's the only place they know how it's done. I welcome anyone who's a decent fella/wench and I couldn't give a fcuk what they are or where they're from. Celebrating your own kind shouldn't mean hating everyone else's.

But why were the troubles situated only in Ireland? I grew up in the 60s. I didn't have parents telling me not to associate with the lad over the road because he was Catholic. The lad over the road didn't tell their son not to associate with me because I wasn't Catholic.

 

It takes a peculiar breed of people to want to kill someone else on the grounds of religion. In the 60s, 70s, 80s and early 90s we were seeing it on an almost daily basis. The disease has now shifted over to the Middle and Far East; places we hardly heard about when we had NI taking up most of the news!

 

Liken religion to football fanatacism. I don't doubt there will be some on here who totally disagree with this analogy but; hey-ho!

I dislike all things United with a passion. (Except maybe the Glazer family! ) If I went away on holiday, however, and found myself in the neighbouring apartment to a family of United fans I wouldn't spend the rest of my holiday wondering how best to offend them. I wouldn't tell my kids not to play with their kids on the grounds of who supports which football team. I wouldn't spout venemous remarks about United. My guess is the United fans wouldn't do any of that to my family either. Why? Because we live in a civilised society, not a society of bigots!

Opinion varies on whether the causes of conflict were religious or national though, personally I think it had a lot more to do with nationality than religion, so it's not as if everyone who killed anyone in NI did it through religious bigotry. But the waters are muddy because the Loyalists especially were trying to defend their Protestant way of life, which has little to do with religion but more to do their idea of Prod work ethic, community and the Crown, stuff like that. The Bible and Jesus has got nowt to do with anything on the Loyalist side for the most part, apart from paisley of course who surely hould be dead by now, he would use religion to fan the lames and motivate ordinary fellas to go out and kill. What a first rate red ginger that man is and has been for about 35 years.

 

That's the biggest tragedy of the whole thing and of any war I suppose; it turns ordinary folk into killers.
