OK I know I haven't posted on here for ages and am probably going to get a torrent of abuse with my partner in crime already here but anyway I will try with a serious question as there seems to be a few football players on here.

 

My step lad has been told that it is worth his while to get some goalkeeping coaching so we are trying to get him on some of the Dave Felgate coaching. Does anyone know if it is any good or how much it costs etc ?

 

Also he has been advised he is good enough to get in an academy (he is 12 nearly 13) but have no real idea how they work, how often they have to attend etc. Anyone had any experience of them ?

Dave felgate coaches young keepers with Ian Senior and it's not bad coaching in fairness.

 

You can't just go to an Academy, though. Your lad needs to be spotted playing by the scouts: he'll then get invited for a 6 week trail, after which he'll either be taken on with a 12 month contract or be released.

 

If he is taken on, he cannot then also play Sunday or Saturday League football. He will have to train at the Academy twice a week for 90 minutes a time and be available for games on Sundays. These games are all over the country, too. It's a big commitment time-wise for both your son and yourself: I should know.

Speaking as a goalkeeper, my serious advice is to tell your step-son to not be a goalkeeper. Nobody remembers the good saves when you make one mistake but everyone forgets the misses of a forward when they score a goal!

 

As for the Dave Felgate school of goalkeeping, why not give it a go if nothing else you can find out how he keeps his tash in such good condition

Dave Felgate does part-time keeper coaching at Platt Lane for City's academy and is a decent coach...

The info we have for Dave Felgate is through just4keepers.com and all it really says is that he does coaching in Bolton and from memory 3 other places.

 

I know what you mean Yatesy but he is a bit pants as an outfield player so its keeper or having to slave 9 to 5 like the rest of us mugs so got to be worth a try for the lad ?

 

I just hope Dave doesn't remember any of the abuse I used to hurl at him for his catching on crosses :-#
