No one pays for a 8 meg line, they pay for UPTO 8 meg. Theres nothing the ISP can do if due to geographical reasons your line can only carry a 2 meg line. No ISP can guarentee a 8 meg connection, with the notable exception of NTL/Telewest/Virgin, when providing over cable. However some ISPs are so oversubscribed, that actual speeds are substantially lower than that the line is capable of.

How far are you from your exchange ? Do you have copper or alumium trunk lines from exchange to junction, and from junction box to house ? Do you have a properly filtered socket ? Wire 4&5 in yopur phone socket - connected or not ? Do you have any extensions on your phone line ? Of what quality are your microfilters ? Is your exchange a LLU enabled one ? Do you have any electrical devices near your phone sockets ? Do you have DECT Phones ? Does your ISP use traffic shaping technology ? Have you tried a multitude of worldwide speed tests, and averaged out the results, or just used one and taken that as gospel ? What contention ratio does your ISP use on your service ? what you are paying for is a service, that under optimal conditions, can carry a signal, without dropd, of upto 8 Mb/s. any of the above, and its not an exhaustive list, can deteriorate the signal quality to such an extent that the adaptive ADSL (ADSL MAX) will synch at a lower speed (ie the fastest speed upto 8 mb/s that a sustainable connection can be made). Its like buying a car in this country that is capable of doing 200mph, hen complaining to the manufacturer that the speed limit is 70mph.

I know folk who have been being ripped off, as they found out after taking this test, and then got it sorted So despite the technical jargon, you are right, it's always worth checking

November 13, 200718 yr adsl2+ is the future, faster speeds over longer distances (apparently) afaik only be and o2 provide this at the min. i will be moving over in the near future. i currently get 1.5mbps on an 8mb line, should get about 5mbps on a 24mb for no extra cost might be a little slower trhan that homer, it appears that on average it is about 10% under 3 times your adsl/adsl max speed. for tgose who want a proper test, This site shows the actual synch speed between yourself and the BT exchange. Most routers also show the sync speed,. along with a total number oif errors on the line, if people looked at that, they might understand why they get slower speeds than they may have hoped for. essentially, if your download speed is in the ballpark of your sync speed, then theres not much the isp can do about it (maybe BT can tweak the db gain on the line, but that at best will give an extra 5%). If your download speed is substantially lower than your sync speed, check your contract with the isp as regards traffic shaping, and then complain.

I got 1.3 meg out of 8 on a standard adsl/max line, then on LLU adsl/2+ it was upto 3.5meg out of 24 (I'm 5k of cable away from the exchange ). Can't praise Be enough meself, had one (advertised) outage, a price drop, and the speed is where I expected it to be. No email account with the package however. I'm rewiring the house this week however, so Im fitting certified sockets in the vain hope that it will give me an extra 4-5% of sync. Others however seem to have had a lot of problems with Be, so you pays your money, you takes your chances I guess.
