Just had the police around asking us if we were in a retail car park on Wednesday. I confirmed that we were there as I had a job interview and the wife waited in the car for me.

 

She saw 3 members of staff come out and have a scout around the car park, but thought nowt of it.

 

Turns out the members of staff said that a shoplifter had gotten into our car, so they gave the police our car registration.

 

We have been cautioned (though not arrested)

 

Have we got grounds to pursue this further?

 

The shop CCTV will prove we did not even enter the store.

Update.

 

We went to the store in question and asked how they could have blamed me or the wife for the theft. The manager stated that all they did was advise the police that "they thought" the thieve(s) headed in the direction of our car (a very full car park btw), and the police had decided to run with it.

 

When the police constables who called this morning returned our call (after reviewing the CCTV) we asked whether or not they would follow up "a thought". They informed us that in the report to the police there was no "thought" and it had been reported as fact.

 

The caution I referred to earlier was not a sanction,more a forewarning that we were being investigated.

Get a brief and complain about the mental torture they're putting you through.

The police then act on what they have been told by the witnesses. When the police talk to you, they caution you first.

Long story, but similar happened to me as a 14 year old and my dad hit the roof with the bullying bastards. I think he might've ended up with a caution because of it!

Then again, when I had a brand new ?12k dumper pinched and gave then the CCTV showing the 4x4 and trailer dragging it away, they refused to even view it and said there was no chance of securing a conviction so fucked it off.

 

Mind you, if the same vehicle had been doing 34 mph, you could be sure they'd do sommat and plonk a ?60 fine on him.

Go back to the store and ask for the cctv footage.Ask them could you have a rights to access form, they have to have them if they have cctv buy very few do .They then have 28 days to send you the footage if they dont put a complaint in.
