If this deal was just about getting a return on the pitch for the thousands of pounds outlay it would be a non-starter. Premiership defenders would love to play against Owen instead of Rooney or Teves.

But we all do. It's all to do with education. In the past I've had a half-jocular dig at some of my kid's mates who dared call round with the red rag on their backs. I pointed out that their loyalties to a club which they've never seen is somewhat misguided. They won't ever get to see them other than on telly. None of them have changed their team yet but they don't wear the red rag if they're calling here so that's a result!

I spend every season not wanting them to win anything. I just look forwards to the day Old red nose either leaves them or suffers a fatal heart attack, well, just leaves them, I've not got him in the dead pool, why should I want someone who has to get it right?
