Radio Buffs

Why do channels still operate on the AM frequency?

Stations like talksport that are national use this but the quality when travelling about is shocking compared to the FM frequency

Is it a financial thing? Bugged me for ages

Not sure, perhaps someone more knowledgable may be able to elaborate, but I think long waves will travel further, without being absorbed.

Might have seen some nature programme saying why creatures like moose, deer etc have 'low pitch' bellows for mating calls etc. Think they travel better in woods etc without being absorbed. These are sound waves however and the whole thing could be bollocks.
