After a DSLR, for mostly recording but after the ability to take shit hot pics too..

i'm new to all this and wondering if there are any to avoid, I'm leaning towards the Nikon as it has higher resolution and looks to be the better choice...

I've got an EOS 600D, it's a belter, but it limits recordings to 4GB filesize, which is because of the format of memory it uses. So it stops recording after 10 mins. I reckons the new model, what I think is a 1000D automatically starts recording another clip again once it reaches 4GBs so you just end up with a load of clips, but you could record for a while, battery/card size permitting.

 

I've always stuck with Canon, but some of these new super slim SLRs that are floating around take a pretty picture. Just watch the prices.

You can't really go wrong with Canon, Nikon or even Sony these days. I'd tend to avoid Panasonic, and Casio, just because they make calculators.

 

Don't worry too much about Pixel resolution, you'll likely never need to do anything with your pics that would warrant anything post 15 Megapixels. Unless you're printing on a 6' canvas.

 

One more bit of advice is always go for a decent SD card, at least a class 6, but I'd get a class 10 just to make sure. The lower classes can't save footage quick enough for HD video, so you'll run into problems straight away. It's gotta be class 10 for my liking. Never had any problems.

Sony bought Minolta Konika, hence I have a Sony so that I didn't have to throw all my Minolta lenses out. It's ok, does what's needed.

I have one of these in black - cracking camera for the price and amazing optical zoom. I paid around £120 at Tesco

 

With a 32gb card in it, it will take 8000+ HD pictures

Got a Penguin folding camera and some 35m 70s cameras at the Mrs grandmas.

 

Other than taking photos on them and being an "original instagram wanker" is there any value in em.
