Peru

Has anybody ever been? Thinking of going in June. Fly to Lima - fly over Nazca lines - visit Machu Picchu - watch a few of the world cup games with the locals.

Never been to South America but flights are reasonable and it's cheap as chips over there. Can anyone help?

I went. Though about 10 years ago. So everything I say may be out of date.

Some thoughts - depends how long you've got, really. Lima's worth a few days - and some decent trips out from there to see nearby Inca ruins (if that's your thing..)

Machu Picchu - definitely. If you've got long enough and want to do the full Inca Trail, book it  now. Otherwise, get a cheap, shorter trek when you're there. Or just go to Cusco and get the train up (I did...)

Nazca - worth flying over the lines, but there's not a lot else there, to be honest. And I spent much of my time in bed/throwing up with a combination of altitude sickness and a bad reaction to chewing coca leaves to combat altitude sickness... So maybe I have a bad impression of it.

I'd recommend a few days around Arequipa and a trip up to trek in the Colca Canyon. That's impressive.

And Puno. A trip on Lake Titicaca is good. And there's some fascinating pre-Inca sites nearby, too.

Getting around - I took the bus. Though you may have less time, and not want to spend 12 hours watching Jason Statham films in Spanish (though they've probably  updated the entertainment since then...) - so you can probably fly most places.

Have fun. You'll enjoy watching football with the locals. Even I enjoyed that, and I fucking hate football.
