Heres the problem i'm with virgin media for my broadband

it's just one cable outside the house wich runs up and through

the main bedroom into the back were i have my desktop pc.

i recently put a splitter in the box outside and a short cable into my

front room so i can play xbox live. when i do this all i do is bring my modem

down and then xbox live works. what do i need to do to get pc working wireless

because i refuse to pay 70 quid for a wireless reciever for the xbox so im going direct

with the cable to the xbox with the modem. but what do i need to buy and do next

any help would be great cheers

wireless PCI card.Good Wireless Router. Someone who knows what theyre doing to configure it.

Well, your first problem is that your on Virgin 'Nazi' Media for a start. Once you've solved that issue, its as above. A wireless router (~?50-60) and either pci/usb wireless adaptor for PC (~?10).

Be warned though. When sending the signal from downstairs to upstairs you may get a rubbish connection on your PC. Best bet is o get an 'N' type router/adapter combo, while more expensive it has a much better range than traditional 'G' networks.

I was lucky cause I blagged it for nowt, only a couple of weeks ago.

 

All you do is take the ethernet/RJ45 cable from the back of the Virgin Modem and plug into the router.

 

Put the CD in and with in mins you running.

 

I know what I'm doing with routers etc and was impressed how simple they have made it.

ive had no probs with em either

 

my current router is way better than the old belkin one i had

 

picked it up from scan for 40 ish

 

think its a netgear one

 

 

edit its a dlink dir615 and comes recommended

Virgin will give you a new router for ?5 (postage) Just phone them and tell them you want to cancel and go with BT of the home hub (router). They will try to keep you and offer a free one.

I am with Virgin, I bought a Netgear WPN 824 Router ( Quite old model ) Just went on Netgear website and followed instructions, up and running in less than 15 mins. Not had any problems with it or Virgin, had it about 2 years now never lost a connection. I use my laptop, smartphones etc.in any room in the house even outside, never once had a problem with it. I got it because it was recommended on a Techgeeks site. What ever you buy make sure it is WPA enabled and not just wep, I think they all are now. The reason I say this, if its only WEP my smart phone can connect and gives me the password of the device also. Techwatch Link
