How It Is

I'm happy to give Megson a chance. Not the chance he's looking for though. It's hard to see where our win's will come from. But football is a funny game. Perhaps we'll get a result against Liverpool. That's the way the game goes and many will revert to a rosy view of Megson.

Has the team had significant strengthening this season? That's debatable. The more I ponder it, the more I think we'd be a cracking Championship side. Without the grandeur of the Premiership, I see us very similar to the likes of West Brom. Yes it's nice to see a collective majority-homegrown team, but it doesn't look like we can compete in the top league.

I've almost accepted we're out for the count this time. The key was upfront, we obviously didn't get enough goals last season. This time round seems like no progress has been made. Where will the goals come from until our defence is solid? The first half on Saturday was agonising to watch. We dicked them but got nowhere. Likewise in the second half, they could have won 4 - 0 with a little luck.

getting rid of him now could be a bad decision and morally a good one, but were is the next win going to come from?

liverpool? doubt it

pompey away? it'll eb out look that they get a friggin win

stoke at home? i'd hope so but there a tought side to beat

in fact were are out goals going to come from?

Pretty sure I know what you mean

We've only lost two games this season - the first in a pretty dire manner and the second after missing a few chances - but when you include the end of last season it makes grim reading.

Last season is relevant because it is pretty much the same team with the addition of a couple of new faces - as for the argument that the players weren't motivated that is just shite and falls directly at the feet of the manager. If he sees someone lacking motivation stick them in the bloody reserves and give someone else a chance.

I'd be thinking about making a change now - not because of the results (not great but he has kept us up) or even the style of play (like watching paint dry at times) but simply because I don't think there is a way for him to get the fans united behind him and the team. Not really a great advert for the club when the 'fans' are fighting amongst themselves at every match and 'fans' are calling for the managers head at the first sign of a mis-placed pass.

As for who I'd get in - there's been loads of names mentioned, some good and some bloody awful - I'd probably go for Strachan (would he come?) or try someone with no Premiership experience, did someone mention Alan Irvine? After all it hasn't done Everton any harm when they took David Moyes did it?

how many of the new signings started in the 1st 2 games.

i'll give you a clue, it was 4

which is actually 40% of the outfield players,

which is nearly half the team you know?

Don't get your point, Homer.

Sure, Tonyw makes an error about the number of new players for the 1st two games. But the spine of the team is pretty much the same, and Plan-A (such as it is) is definitely the same.

Anyway the point is that if those 4 were better players than what we had, then the team should be performing better than last season - especially if you accept later last season they were 'de-motivated' coz they felt safe (which I don't accept). And we're clearly not performing better.

Also the question has to be asked : was it a sensible management decision to include 4 new players from day 1.

Whichever way you look at it, however you juggle the statistics, is looks pretty awful.

My first checkpoint with Megson is at Tranmere.

dont disagree with this part.

but to say it was the same team is just wrong, and plan-a as you call it is not the same. we played totally different against hull than we did against sunderland, as in we actually did play a bit and we unlucky not to have won at a canter.

Is this turning into a thread of folk that'd make Megson seem like the Messiah?

What do you mean Micky he's going to Newcastle?

no, he's just a very naughty boy.

No, I didn't realise that 40% was almost half :)

Ricketts, Robinson and Knight all play at the back and I'm pretty sure (although I haven't actually asked anyone at the club and have no evidence to support this) that they weren't bought to enhance the creativity of the team. So, of the more creative players on the pitch (midfield and forwards) we have started with 5 or the 6 that played the majority of the games last season that's over 83% you know!

So, IMHO the end of last season is pretty relevant :D :D :D

Not quite true that - I reckon the players brought into defence have actually reduced the creativity.

IMO Steinnson and JSL offered as much creativity as any player last season. I haven't seen enough of Ricketts and Robinson yet to fully justify this next commnet but for me, Robinson especially, seems to offer far less going forward compared to the player he replaced.

This seems compounded by the fact that Megson, not quite so subtlety, back tracked on his comments from the season previous on enhancing the football on show. He must have witnessed his new signings on the training field and thought "oh shit, not what I was hoping for."
